HEADLINE: Signs for Bush taken at rally, father, son say
BYLINE: SAM TRANUM

Phil Parlock didn't expect to need all 12 of the Bush-Cheney signs he and his son Louis smuggled in their socks and pockets into the rally for Vice President Al Gore.

But each time they raised a sign, someone would grab it out of their hands, the two Huntington residents said. And sometimes it got physical.

"I expected some people to take our signs," said Louis, 12. "But I did not expect people to practically attack us."

The two said they didn't go to the Friday morning rally to start trouble.

"I came to support Bush and try to change some people's minds," Louis said.

Gore's West Virginia campaign said Bush-Cheney signs were not welcome, but physical confrontations to eliminate them would not have been condoned.

Parlock, a real estate agent, thought it would be at least as educational for his son to spend the morning at the Gore rally as it would have been to spend the day at school. So the two got in the car and drove from Huntington, arriving in Charleston about 9 a.m.

Parlock said he was a volunteer for the Bush-Cheney campaign. He is listed on the West Virginia Bush-Cheney Web site as the Cabell County contact for the campaign.

But he said he came as a supporter, not a campaign worker. His visit to Charleston was "unencouraged and unsanctioned," he said. The idea was to show that there was another option besides Gore.

"My opinion of the press is it always shows the liberal viewpoint," he said. "And we have to struggle to show the other side exists."

He and Louis brought a supply of Bush-Cheney signs and smuggled them into the rally. They stuffed plastic ones in their socks and pockets and folded paper ones inside Gore-Lieberman signs.

Though tickets to the event specifically said no signs would be allowed in, Parlock said he walked right in with the Gore-Lieberman signs. He said people who carried Bush-Cheney signs openly were not allowed to bring them inside.

Parlock and his son, clad in white button-down shirts and ties, took their place in front of the Capitol steps and waited. As the rally got going, they started raising their signs and people immediately began stealing them, Parlock said.

"Three guys came up and squeezed me in and one grabbed my arms and pulled them down and another took the sign," Parlock said.

"Another guy came up and tried to grab the sign but I had a good hold of it and he stumbled and bumped into other people and started a ruckus," he said. Parlock said the police ejected the man from the rally.

Police said Friday evening they could not yet comment on any incidents at the rally.

Parlock said a group of people wearing T-shirts and jackets with the United Mine Workers of America logo took away many of their signs.

"I didn't see anything like that," said Ted Hapney, an international representative for the United Mine Workers. "I wouldn't do that. We don't condone any type of violence."

Another incident involved Louis and a teenage girl he and Parlock said they met at the rally. They said they didn't know who she was.

"She walked up and said 'I'll get on your shoulders and hold a sign,' " Louis said.

While she was sitting on Louis' shoulders waving a Bush-Cheney sign, a man who identified himself as a volunteer for the Gore campaign tried to pull the sign out of the girl's hands, Parlock said. He pulled so hard that Louis and the girl fell over.

"That sounds like an exaggeration," said Sarah Feinberg, spokeswoman for Gore's West Virginia campaign.

Parlock said the man was wearing a yellow pass around his neck. Feinberg said the color for a volunteer pass would be orange, while yellow passes were given to members of the press.

"We certainly don't have a policy of ripping signs out of people's hands," said Feinberg. "If someone brings a Bush-Cheney sign, we don't like it but we don't go to great lengths to obscure."

Parlock said after all his signs were stolen, he got some more from a group of Bush supporters who had not been allowed into the rally.

Though police said they were not ready to make official comment Friday evening, earlier Friday an officer said he had seen a scuffle during the rally.

Charleston Police Patrolman R.H. Vinyard said the incident involved people with Bush-Cheney signs, though he could not identify them by name. He said Gore supporters got into a fight with the Bush supporters about 10 minutes before the end of Gore's speech.

He said the altercation lasted about 45 seconds, was over before the police arrived to break it up and no one was treated for injuries. Afterward, he said, the Bush supporters tore up their own signs and left the area.

As workers cleaned up the debris from the rally in front of the Capitol after the rally, Parlock sat next to a pile of ripped up Bush-Cheney signs he had collected. He said he thought the people who took his signs went too far.

Still, he said he'd do it again.

And he thinks it was a good educational experience for Louis, too.

"You can't get this kind of a lesson in school," he said.

HEADLINE: DOLE SUPPORTERS FIND IT ROUGH AT CLINTON RALLY
BYLINE: The Associated Press

HUNTINGTON - Some Clinton protestors say the president's supporters
shouted them down and kept their signs from being seen as the
president kicked off his re-election campaign.
Others said they had no problem getting through the gates with signs
promoting Bob Dole's Republican candidacy.
Clint Gillespie and Robert Painter of Huntington managed to obtain
tickets to the priority viewing area outside the old Chesapeake & Ohio
passenger station in Huntington for a Clinton-Gore campaign rally on
Sunday.
Armed with the tickets, they marched through the gate with Dole-Kemp
placards tucked under their arms.
They obtained their tickets by promising those at Democratic
headquarters they would be waving signs during the president's visit,
but they did not reveal their signs would be in support of Dole.
"Clinton thinks he can just come here to Huntington and get a crowd,
but we're here to show not all West Virginians share Clinton's
values," said Gillespie, a senior at Marshall University.
"We always try to give them a warm Republican welcome," said Painter,
a recent graduate of Marshall University.
Phil Parlock's experience was less calm.
The Huntington man said he was knocked to the ground by a Clinton
supporter when he tried to display a sign that read "Remember Vince
Foster," the deputy White House counsel who committed suicide in a
Washington, D.C., park. His death has become the subject of much
debate among Clinton opponents.
"It must have been a strict Democrat who did this," Parlock said,
feeling the red abrasions on his face. "Everyone with the exception of
him was real peaceful about our protest."
Parlock said some of the crowd tried to make other anti-Clinton
demonstrators feel unwelcome. He estimated that about 150 Dole
supporters attended the rally, but their signs couldn't be seen for
most of the rally.
"I came to show that not everyone from Huntington is going to vote for
Clinton," Parlock said.

Perhaps it's time to start an ongoing website: PP's Presidential Pool. Folks can join in each presidential election to predict the date and type of stunt that Phil Parlock will attempt.

I just finished reading about the guy who was "attacked" at the Kerry rally for teamsters in Ohio.

He is posting on freakrepublic as Tail Gunner John.

He claims that he went to the rally specifically to provoke an incident. He chose where he would be sitting based on the idea of either provoking, or staging an incident to get coverage to be of him.

Based on reading his entire account, and the fact that he has not pressed charges, I think it is possible that it was staged for that very reason.

here's one of his posts:

There is a reason I chose to sit next to these two readily identifiable examples of "labor outreach". My mindset was to put the question of Kerry's self admitted war crimes in play. I knew my question would never be heard as I would surely be shouted down. Something had to happen to make me a viable "news story" after the rally. Otherwise, we would not be having this conversation

his posting history is here:

He is using his kids as pawns - and now he is complaining? Kind of cowardly behavior if you ask me - why doesn't HE confront people if he is so brave. I am starting to dislike this guy. I think your story find might, unfortunately, be very bad for him though - at least if I understand human nature in any way.

actually his daughter who is now in the National Guard. Notice that the article never mentioned her name? She appeared and then disappeared after the skirmish.

He likes to involve his kids in these activities--if he would use his three-year-old girl, I am sure that he would have had no qualms about using his teenage daughter in the previous incident.

40. I also e-mailed to Jim Ross at the Herald-Dispatch, who carried...
the story of the Edwards rally at Tri-State Airport, where this all occurred.

Ross, of course, didn't leave out the bits about Parlock:

http://www.herald-dispatch.com/2004/September/17/LNtop1.htm
<snip>
A Republican family attended the rally to show support for the Bush-Cheney ticket. Phil Parlock, a Barboursville resident and strong Republican, said his family was accosted by some Kerry supporters.

"We do it peacefully and quietly to show respect. And, we don’t want to get kicked out of anything," Parlock said.

After standing on the tarmac with the Kerry supporters, Parklock and three of his children moved down to the airport road near a parking lot exit.

With Parlock were sons Phil II, 21, and Alex, 11, and daughter Sophia, 3.

Parlock said a Kerry supporter yanked a Bush-Cheney sign out of Sophia’s hands, making her cry. As they stood along the road later, someone threw the ripped-up remains of the sign at them as they passed.

Thousands cheer Bush
At state Capitol, President defends war on terrorism
By JIM ROSS - The Herald-Dispatch

<snip>
The Phil Parlock family of Barboursville -- father, mother and 10 children -- likewise made the trip as a family. Rachel, 13, said it was the second time she had seen Bush.

"It was really good that we got the president on the 4th of July," she said.

Her older sister, Pam, 22, said she has seen Bush so many times she has lost count.

"You hope to get closer each time. Hopefully someday we’ll get a handshake," she said.

Pam Parlock said she be-longs to the Marshall Young Republicans, and she could have sat with them, but she wanted to be with her family, even if it cost her the handshake. She is a member of the West Virginia Army National Guard and was called to duty last year. The 1257th Transportation Co., to which she belongs, spent some time at West Point, but it never went overseas, she said.

Alex Parlock, 11, said he shook Bush’s hand four years ago during a campaign visit at Harris Riverfront Park in Huntington. Alex said he was sitting on his father’s shoulders and wearing a Bush mask when then-candidate Bush saw him and shook his hand.

Edited on Fri Sep-17-04 04:55 AM by girl gone mad
This guy has a history of using his children as political props. Personally, I think the whole thing was staged to make Dems look bad. We just need to find out who the guy was that grabbed the sign.

I was trying to find a photograph of his sons. He makes protesting a family affair, and I suspect that this was a set-up involving one of his older sons posing as the Democrat sign snatcher.

Edit: I found it. Here's the Parlock family:

His son in blue on the right could be a match. What do you guys think?

Edit: I think there are some similarities. His body type matches, as does his hair, mouth and skin tone. Are there any other photos of this guy from the rally?

Let me try this again:

The sign snatcher on the left and one of Parlock's sons on the right.

Tell me these two men aren't related somehow:

That's Phil Parlock on the left, and the sign snatcher on the right.

28. Damn fine research.
I was willing to let this slide down the memory hole as something that makes us come across badly. After reading this, plus his other blurbs in the paper, it's pretty obvious the guy's a media hound. I really doubt the veracity of any of his claims as he-
a) is a whore for a camera or an eager reporter. and
b)has no qualms using his children as props for his publicity hunting.

again, well done. Keep this kicked.

30. REZMUTT, check this out--INFO ON THE PHOTOGRAPHER:
Randy Snyder, who made the photograph, is the chief photographer of the Herald-Dispatch--the paper that had written previous articles about Parlock's activism--and had to be aware of this man's history of disruption and skirmishes at Democratic events.

I would go so far as to say that Snyder and Parlock worked together to get this shot.

If you want to email your findings to Snyder, here is his contact info:

48. jchild, I'm finally going to have to turn in...
Have to get up to go to the office tomorrow morning, so I might not have a chance to follow up on this for several hours.

I sent the story to Keith Olberman/MSNBC.

Something else is troubling me about Parlock: Why would a right-wing caucasian man who lives in West Virginia be a member of the NAACP? It's possible, I suppose, and I'm hesitant to make anything of this, but it just entirely seems contrary to his personal history.
http://callmcguire.com/associates/agent-pp.shtml
"Phil enjoys spending time with his large family, gardening, hunting, fishing, and tinkering with cars. He is active in his church, with the Boy Scouts, and is on the Executive Committee of the local branch of the NAACP."

To be continued.

If you're up for awhile, please keep this thread kicked -- thanks!

One of the local articles said that he has run four times and been defeated each time.

I would bet that he joined the NAACP in an effort to attract the African American vote in his county.

Can somebody who is better at research than I am find out who is on the local school board and send this information to them? They might want to know that their perennial candidate is faking assaults, using his minor children as props.

They are getting lost in the discussion.

They show this guy's history of showing up at Democratic events with his kids and Republican signs and getting into skirmishes, and they show that the photographer has worked at both papers in which the father's activism has been featured, which raises the question whether the photographer colluded with the father for this photo-op.

They also show that the guy in the blue union tee shirt might be Porlock's oldest son, which would confirm that this whole skirmish was staged!

71. I think so, too..
I looked at the photos for quite a while. There were several markers that looked like a match. I was looking at the distance between features as well as the shape of the ears and face. Also, the height is a close match.

The comparison between the father and the sign grabber really struck me, though. It's in the eyes. If it isn't his son, they have to be related somehow.

I wish we had some more photos from the event to compare, though. Also, it would be interesting to see if there were other people in Painter's Union shirts around.

70. Actually, I think Skinner needs to include Parlock in his top ten idiots
Edited on Fri Sep-17-04 07:11 AM by jchild
this week:

* Parlock has a history of creating skirmishes at opposing party's events in which he always comes out the victim:

- 1996
- 2000

* The photographer who took the photo works for the two papers that have featured Parlock's shady activism in the past. He just happened to be at the right place, right time, which raises questions of this being a staged event, with collusion between Parlock and the photographer.

*Earlier photographs of Parlock's eldest son appear very similar to the union guy who supposedly ripped the sign away from Parlock's son--meaning that it appears that no Democrats assaulted any of the Parlocks, but brother assaulted father and sister, in front of a camera man who JUST HAPPENED to be at the right place, right time.

I think we need to put this out there aggressively, to show US voters that there is NO LEVEL to which rabid Republicans will not sink to make Democrats look scummy.

This guy needs to be exposed for what he is. I think EVERYONE here should nominate this thread and ask Skinner to include this guy and his progeny in his Top Ten list this week.

JMHO...

I find it just awful that he's teaching his children to be sneaky and dishonest. If their beliefs are worthy, why can't they be honest and aboveboard? Why the constant stunts meant to deceive and mislead?

Did they start out trying to provoke their opponents but instead found tolerance? At what point did they decide to skip debate and honest speech and just get right to the " putting the girls on Dad's shoulders " routine?

It's just so corrupt and dishonest and truly immoral.

118. If the attacker was her brother, it was child abuse.
A parent may not encourage a sibling to assault another sibling.
In civil law, grabbing something, such as a sign, that someone is carrying is assault.

That little girl could have been seriously injured had someone rushed to her rescue and started a physical fight around her father and attacker, whether her brother or not. What parent would endanger his three-year-old in that way?

96. This is why it is important to OUT this story
A sample from my local message board from a Freeper.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Thought this was worth passing on to all of you.

Kerry Supporters attack Father and Daughter for holding Bush/Cheney sign

Excuse my vulgarity, but is this how *%#@$* low can Democrats get? They tore a Bush/Cheney Sign out of the hands of a little girl and her father and ripped it up in her face.

The pro-Kerry bullies have decided that it is open season on children now.
The last I heard, this is still a free country, why shouldn't a father be able to take his daughter out without being abused by Leftist bullies?
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Thank you all for getting this out in the light of day.

97. this PISSES me off
If my husband even entertained the idea of pulling a stunt like this with our daughter, I'd rip him a new one. I love my husband, but I have ultimate responsibility for my child.

The #1 job of any parent is to do everything you possible can to KEEP YOUR CHILD SAFE. This three year old girl is not a doll, she is not a prop, she is not a tool for his political ideology. His stunt could have incited a violent reaction from the people around him. What would he have done if that happened?

...and they get on their high horse and preach about family values. I'm disgusted. Absolutely disgusted.

125. it's too late for this
the photo is what matters, not any facts pertaining to the photo. We can either 1) counter-attack, 2) do the rebuttal thing for a month, or 3) change the subject.

If I could get the campaign to reconsider one taboo: Edwards can't be Bad Cop. He needs to bat his eyelashes like Reagan and talk about the mill. Let Kerry be the prosecutor/drill-sergeant guy; since he'll never be warm and cuddly, let him be fearsome and commanding but without McCain's bizarre grimace or Dean's deer-in-the-headlights look. America wants an alpha male, and Bush is about the farthest thing from self-sufficient manhood.

133. DU rocks.
I just got here, and I can't believe how fast the ID of Parlock's kid was made. Kudos. for the record, I called LA Times Nat'l desk and told them I'll be very unhappy if this story isn't covered. Sent drudge the link, offered him a grand for BC04 if he puts it up- ya think those emailed 'tips' actually go anywhere?- and wrote Parlock's photog, WV paper.

but here's the thing.

over at the Freep site, it says that BUSH IS GOING TO CALL THE LITTLE GIRL TO COMFORT HER. HE'S GOING TO TRY TO LEGITAMIZE THIS HOAX.

It's an interesting idea. let him go ahead and then demand he excoriate this parlock...or warn bush and see if parlock does something else.

anyways, just wanted to say- you guys are the best. while they're running on lies and venom, we have facts and smarts (better in the sack, too) (really. ya ever kissed a Republican? Yecccch) (Mouth-breathers)

134. History with herald dispatch
I've posted the article from July 5, where Pam Parlock and Alex Parlock were talked about in a interview on that date.

They have a past history with herald dispatch. Not to mention oneo the Parlock family members tells the writer who just happens to be
By JIM ROSS. Guess who the photographer was on July 5, at this event none other then Randy Snyder.

Let me point out a few interesting paragraphs. There's also a new article http://www.herald-dispatch.com/2004/September/18/LNtop1.htm But first let me point out this other article some fine points on it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Alex Parlock, 11, said he shook Bush’s hand four years ago during a campaign visit at Harris Riverfront Park in Huntington. Alex said he was sitting on his father’s shoulders and wearing a Bush mask when then-candidate Bush saw him and shook his hand.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pam Parlock said she be-longs to the Marshall Young Republicans
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Her older sister, Pam, 22, said she has seen Bush so many times she has lost count.

"You hope to get closer each time. Hopefully someday we’ll get a handshake," she said.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.herald-dispatch.com/2004/July/05/LNspot.htm

Look at the date of the article first off Monday, July 5, 2004

Also look who wrote this article. By JIM ROSS - The Herald-Dispatch

Then we look who is interviewed:

No matter how much Sunday’s visit was billed as an official trip, the election was on many people’s minds. Monty Warner, the Republican candidate for governor, said he expects Bush to carry the state, just as he did in 2000.

Many people leaving the event walked past protesters holding signs for John Kerry for president or protesting Bush’s war on terror.

Mechanical problems forced Bush’s flight from Washington to be late, and that forced him to alter his schedule. He had planned to attend a service at the Bible Center Church in Kanawha County. In his speech, Bush said he wanted to visit the church because of its outreach programs.

142. Thanks
I will tell you a couple of things I love about the timing of this staged event. First reason, This story is going to be the back bone that discredits Free Republic. Reasons are because it shows Free Republic has had ties with the media. This is going to work in Kerry/Edwards favor because enough people have kept their team aware.

Two this is nothing but a Karla Roves stuant with this guy. We already have evidence of him bugging his own office, Releasing his own Coaching tape, and a invovlement of this guy with a shooting at their own Republican HQ. These facts all link to Karla Rove.

The third is there is already coverage of the President responding to this by sending the girl a signed photo. Keep in mind the time frame of this even. It hasn't even been 48 hours. Another thing is if you buy that our President is able to have super intellegence and can pick this story out in less then 48 hours why wasn't he able to stop 9/11 then.

Another thing this proves is that the neo-cons are running out of time. All the polls are wrong, this event proves the GOP is controlling the media. This also proves why the media didn't cover or tell where Edwards is. Oh look how convent we wonder why you're party isn't sending out edwards. Look Look we couldn't cover him but People Proof Dick Cheney isn't as hateful as Edwards. See they've been keeping him from us because he's been having his supports beat up on little girls while we aren't looking.

First shame on you Karla Roves for thinking that democrats aren't smart. You gave us a conspiracy and we gave you the facts. Now doesn't this make you want to hear Kerry say in November to George W. Bush,"You're Fire! BTW don't let the door hit you on the butt on you're way out."

135. Funny...
Funny... How perspectives change depending on where you stand. Sounds like a tactic that many of you should be familiar with - no? Oh wait, how would we really know when there are so many who choose to hide their faces when employing the same tactics they so adamantly oppose. Truly, hypocrisy knows no bounds no matter who's side your on.

136. So far.
Republican men have kicked a woman as she was being held down by Secret Service, pulled a woman out by the hair, shouted down and had arrested the grieving mother of a soldier killed in Iraq, and staged a "sign tearing" event using children as props.

Where exactly do you see parallels with Democrats? You Republicans are absolutely drunk on anger. It's disgusting.

139. the really funny, i mean really funny
my husband who is a texan republican for life heard this story about a dem taking the sign and ripping up and making a little girl cry and he whipped his head around to me and said, "a democrat did that?" in such surprise. then i explained about this mans pattern and not sure if a democrat was involved. but i assure you he was surprised to hear a dem would do that. he wouldnt be surprised if republican had been the one

also when i was talking on a freeper board and in a good half hour conversation with the members he asked if i had given my email. i did i say. thanks a lot he says, concerned what repercussion would be with his fellow repugs. doesnt have any concern my giving out email address to democrats
