Possible problem with Kerry's Letterman appearance Monday
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 11:15 PM by TheWebHead
The musical act on Monday night is Green Day, their new single & album title is 'American Idiot'... (sample lyrics: "Well maybe I'm the faggot America. I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.") I know how the right wing media machine works and they no doubt will try to tie Kerry to an "anti-American" message performed by the musical act that appeared "on the show with John Kerry" conservative surrogates will say in their talking points.

I'd suggest Kerry urge the group to play another song off the album and leave before their performance. I like Green Day, like the song, and like the message of the song, but I'm pragmatic enough to know conservatives will exploit this and it can't help Kerry appearing just before a song entitled 'American Idiot' is performed.

3. I'm Sure There Will Be Jokes About It
since Letterman is pro-Kerry, hopefully he'll use humor to blunt any kind of criticism that could arise

5. Disagree! I hope GD does that very number. Let the knuckle-draggers
on the wackball right chirp all they want. The thing they WON'T ever understand is that that song is about them! They serve as such prime props. They ARE the "redneck agenda," eh?

Besides, it's an awesome fucking song! I'm hoping that with GD on the bill, viewership may be up even higher.

GO JOHN! Rock n' Roll!

10. well remember how the right exploited
the Kerry/Edwards NY fundraiser and Whoopi Goldberg... and that wasn't even televised. Yes, this may sound fun for the base, but this could be another thing that focuses the debate off what Kerry says, and instead on trying to tie Green Day to John Kerry. That's how the right has worked throughout this campaign, don't expect them to react differently after Monday night.

6. Let Green Day play what they want
What does Letterman's staff picking a group have to do with him? Why shouldn't Green Day play what they want? They are talented and have alot of passion behind their hard work.

7. A much bigger problem for Kerry is that Letterman won't be on tonight.
He's only on Monday through Friday.::evilgrin:

9. That would be a stretch.
And if they give the song publicity, so be it. I heard it, I thought it was right on.

In any case the second Kerry starts talking to Green Day about which song they're going to play, he's colluding with them.

11. Let them try.
Personally, I think they would be making a mistake.

As much as I like Whoopi, she's long been a target of criticism and satire. I think the GOP had an easy time picking on Kerry for being associated with her after her remarks. Green Day doesn't generally elicit such a strong negative response from a segment of the population.

Anyhow, I doubt Kerry is going to say Green Day represents mainstream American values.

13. well it could provide him a "Sista Soulja" opportunity
undoubtably helping Green Day with album sales with their release this Tuesday in the process.

14. We cannot be cowards - the right wing fears nothing, we fear everything!
Kerry should go on Howard Stern as soon as possible too!

The American people don't want a coward for president when Bush is yelling about terrorism every day. Kerry needs to be strong and stop letting the right wing scare him.

15. I can see what you're saying.
But, I wish the message would get through to so many 'American idiots', that we need regime change at home. Maybe this is just the kind of thing that we need. I like it.

16. Oh, yes, if Kerry & everybody else avoids any controversy...
Perhaps the Republicans will stop saying all those bad things about them.

B.S.

Let Kerry be Kerry, let Green Day be Green Day, let Letterman be Letterman.

17. Kerry will not ask Green Day to play another song
And I think you are confused about the definition of "pragmatic."
Hiding under the sheets won't win an election.
