My October Suprise
I will be having my own 'October Suprise' on my website if all goes well...
http://BushLies2.Us
SURPRISE FILM TO BE SHOWN OCTOBER 1
I am currently trying to contact a certain film-maker who made a very popular film which, according to an article on his website, he wants shown to as many Americans before the election as possible. Since this film has already made in the hundreds of millions, I feel it is safe to say that if anyone involved with this film was in it for the money, they are satisfied with the results far beyond their wildest dreams. However, since I feel that most, if not all, involved with this film were in it for one simple reason - to defeat King George, I think it is time for the remainder of the people who are using the excuse that they don't want to spend the money or whatever to finally see this important film. According to the film maker, in a sample audience in Ohio, this film caused a 21 point swing in Bush's approval rating. I have now tried for 5 consecutive days to contact this film maker via the address supplied on his website. Each time I send the email proposing web distribution, I get the email returned because his mailbox is full. This is understandable, but since I have found no other way of contacting him, I can only go by his statements that he wants as many Americans to see it as possible. With 10,000 unique visitors to this site each month, that is an additional 10,000 additional viewers of the film before election day (and that is pretty conservative, since when a popular film like this is shown on my site, my visits spike dramatically). I will continue to try to email this film maker each day until October 1. If unable to contact him by then to get an official OK, this site will have its own version of an 'October Suprise'. I do respect the rights of this film maker and all involved in its making. I commend them for their brilliant film that exposes this corrupt administration to a large group of people. If this film maker contacts me before October 1 and tells me not to post the film (because of contractual problems, or personal problems with the idea), I will respect that and the film will not be shown. However, with no objection, I will be showing this film. The name of this film (though probably very obvious to most) will be revealed when either I contact the film maker or when the film is shown. Here is my proposal on viewing:
A low quality version will be shown for free, just like the other videos on the site, on the main channel. The video and audio quality will be poor, but understandable. Alternatively, one will be able to pay to view a high-quality version on-line with sharp video and much more clear audio. In addition, with payment to view this higher quality version, I will order a copy of this film directly from the film makers site (when it becomes available on DVD in early October) in your name, and the DVD of this film will be sent to your residence. Whatever the film maker charges for the DVD is what I will charge for this, plus $1 to pay for the high bandwidth requirement to stream the video to you.
Since many of us who have seen this film in theaters have seen the film several times, and urged many friends to come along, even when they seemed dead against it...and since this film maker is urging people to get the DVD then hold 'house parties', where thousands of people will be seeing it for free at one of these house parties, I think that the film maker may actually approve of this. After all, it should be looked at as one big month long house party on the web. I hope he sees it the same way, as I do feel it is vitally important to show this film to as many people as possible. One post to a conservative board that this film is online for free, and hundreds, if not thousands of republicans will actually see the film. With viewing as easy as a mouse click, you can show it easily to your freeper friends and relatives with ease.

1. Does anyone feel that I shouldn't?
Just wonderng if anyone here would have any hardcore objections to this.

3. Good luck with that piracy thing.
You might want to contact a good lawyer too. Although MM says he doesn't mind people showing the film off I am sure that the company backing the DVD and Video sales say another thing.

4. Ahem...

I don't think you're going to get much response if you're suggesting, directly or indirectly, that you're going to engage in R&R "the warez way" (i.e., rip 'n republish.)

However, I heard him say that he wasn't too much concerned with rippers on the P2P scene, when asked about illegal copies circulating on the Net. In fact, he came pretty close to saying (or suggesting... Is there a difference?) that he was eager to look askew as long as people saw the movie and that way contributed to toss the monkey.

So... I think that's as much as you'd reasonably need to know in order to make up your mind on your own.

However: I'd think twice (really!) before putting a copy on-line via a web site. It wouldn't take long before a bushista contacted your host and demand "in the name of copyright protection" that either access to that file, or your whole site be shut down.

Another thing is to figure out how to compile a list of "easy" pointers to copies of that file, i.e. on the P2P scene. Whether you play a role in such a P2P distribution is of course a question not to be asked or answered...

I suspect though that that file will be such a hot commodity (pursued by both fans and detractors) that keeping track will be, um, challenging.

Whichever it is that you feel like doing, don't bother contacting MM for approval - he simply can't give you that, nor can anyone acting on his behalf or that of other "legit" copyright holders.

A very different approach is to find a "safe haven" (host) abroad who isn't afraid of some serious bandwidth consumption and a sympathetic view towards your goal. Best of all would be if that "safe haven" were located someplace where authorities have no interest in acting on behalf of yankee dollar and/or the bushista mob.

In answer to your question later here: do I think you should do it? No. Unless, again, you're ready to accept the pretty real risk of being shut down faster than you can say "DMCA."

Do I think it's worthwhile to apply some creative thinking to achieve your goal? Yes!

Good luck...

5. My understanding is F-9/11 will be on DVD only - true?
If so, that leaves out a significant share of the seniors. My parents and most of their friends have VHS, but not DVD.

Do you suppose Mike would wink at making VHS copies to share with as many people as possible?

7. I'm buying a couple of copies
One for me
One to share with friends
one to give to my parent's retirement residence - will also supply VHS copies for them to pass around.

The facility they live at often has movie nights, and they also share videos with each other. I'd bet a lot of these "Truman democrats" have heard about the movie, would like to have seen it, but it wasn't playing nearby, or it's too hard to get to the theatres when you're over 65.

I may even buy a copy for our local library...so they have enough on the shelves!
