He's not even going to rule out co-ops
Co-ops are something that from what I read were taken seriously by hardly anyone as a real solution. Imo, if he's leaving that on the table, then he's not "moving the debate" one inch in this speech.

One very outspoken Obama defender here at DU said that any reporter who says co-ops are still a viable option is not credible.

Well, then, what does that make David Axelrod?

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/09/obama-to-acknowledge-the-potential-for-compromise-on-the-public-option.php?ref=fpa

Questioned further by Wolf Blitzer, Axelrod said Obama will nod at both of most commonly suggested public option alternatives: the co-op model, and the triggered public option.

"He will acknowledge ," Axelrod said. "There's the idea of putting trigger on the public option so it goes into effect at some date when it's clear that a market is uncompetitive. There are a number of ideas, but what is very important is that we have the kind of competition and choice that will help consumers in many states in this country."

3. All a trigger is
Is a scheme to buy time for the day when the insurance industry thinks it can buy the Congress back for the Pukes.

5. Good. I'm a member of USAA, the best co-op around so I
Edited on Wed Sep-09-09 04:55 PM by Phx_Dem
don't have a problem with co-ops as long as they are national, not state-based. Any time USAA makes a profit, the members get a check, which is every year. Plus my car and homeowners insurance is cheaper than anyone elses and the rate of my home equity line is about 2.5 percent and my credit card is around 6.9 percent. Not bad for a "shitty" co-op.

One of our local energy companies, Salt River Project, is a co-op as well. Been around forever and provides cheaper energy than the alternative Arizona Public Service. I have the latter because I don't have a choice due to where I live, but because I don't have a choice, I get a nice little refund check every year from Salt River Project for the difference between what I paid the expensive APS and what I would have paid if I were able to have SRP. Usually several hundred dollars a year.

Large co-ops are not bad. I don't know how they got such a bad rap.

7. They pull shit too
I tried to get a homeowners quote with USAA, and they had to "send it to underwriting" where they declined to cover me. So yes, they too have gotten a whiff of how to deny claims. I wouldn't expect them to deny as many claims as a for-profit company, but co-ops are far from perfect.

9. I've been a member for more than 20 years and never had the
slightest problem. I've never waited more than 30 minutes for a loan or credit card approval. They do it over the phone in about 15 minutes.

8. The trigger goes into effect "at some date when it's clear that a market is uncompetitive"
Axelrod must be a special kind of idiot not to realize that day is already here, and has been for at least the last 10 years.
