Senate names caucus room for Kennedy brothers

By ANDREW TAYLOR, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – The Senate's most famous hearing room will be renamed in honor of the trio of Kennedy brothers who served in Congress' upper chamber.

The gilded caucus room of the Russell Senate Office Building would become the "Kennedy Caucus Room" under a resolution approved by a voice vote on Monday after virtually no debate.

Democrats had hoped to pass the resolution last week after a day of tributes to the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

"This was Teddy's wish and desire," Sen. Christopher Dodd, Kennedy's closest friend, said last week. Kennedy died of brain cancer last month after nearly a half-century in the Senate. He was 77.

"I asked him, what could we do to recognize him? He said, "I'd like to have you recognize my brothers as well for their contribution,'" Dodd said. Kennedy's home-state colleague, Democrat John Kerry, also sponsored the resolution.

3. Thaks, this is great to see.
Here's the CNN article on this

Dodd said in the statement that affixing the Kennedy name to the Caucus Room would honor "the things that the three Senators Kennedy have done," as well as "the spirit of compassion and compromise, fierce advocacy and tender friendship, that Teddy embodied perhaps more than any other senator of our time."

Kerry called the unanimous support for the resolution "equally a tribute to Ted and his brothers who gave so much to our country as well as a reminder to every senator who will ever serve here of the legacy of public service and duty to country that they inherit."

Ted Kennedy was a senator from Massachusetts from 1962 until his recent death. President John F. Kennedy served as a senator from Massachusetts, and Robert F. Kennedy was a senator from New York.

Their family is the only one in American history to have three brothers serve in the Senate, the statement said.

4. Here's a link to the very short speeches on this
http://www.c-spanarchives.org/congress/?q=node/77531&id=9031005

Here, you can read all of what Dodd said and hear the last paragraph and you can hear all of Kerry's words. (CSPAN has some problems here as they are out of sync and beginning of Dodd's is nowhere.
