Here's my latest, offered for the constructive comments and critiques of DU, the world's best editing service:
The “liberal media” are, sadly, fully absorbed in a debate over whether the infamous CBS documents are genuine. I say “sadly” because the authenticity of these particular documents does not really matter. Even if the papers themselves turn out to be forgeries, we have ample evidence from many other sources that their contents are accurate. We know that Bush got into the Air National Guard through favoritism. The politician who did the favor has come forward with full details about that sorry incident. Furthermore, one of Bush’s old professors at Harvard recalls Bush used to brag about how he used his connections to beat the draft. We know that Bush was ordered to take a physical examination In order to retain his flight status and refused. There is even a copy of that order circulating widely on the Internet, and nobody has tried to refute it. We know that Bush pretended to transfer himself from the Texas Air National Guard to the Alabama Guard, and then never showed up for duty in Alabama, except to have some dental work done at taxpayer expense. Nobody in the Alabama Guard remembers having ever seen him, and nobody has come forward to claim any of the $60,000 reward that has been posted for anyone who can prove Bush completed his service honorably. We do not know if the CBS documents are genuine, but we do know that this man skipped out on his own responsibilities to his country and continues to lie about the dark secrets of his own past. Perhaps if George Bush had had the integrity and character to fulfill his duties in the Vietnam era he would have been less eager to send more than 1,000 young Americans to their deaths in another ill-conceived, bungled war that we cannot win.
