Conservatives urge P&G boycott

Christian groups go after Crest, Tide due to company's opposition to Cincinnati anti-gay statute.
September 17, 2004: 7:00 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Conservative Christian groups are urging a boycott of two of consumer product maker Procter & Gamble's key products, charging the company is aligning itself with gay rights groups, according to a published report...

We could start by boycotting Wal-Mart and work through the list of companies that have outsourced jobs:

1. I wish he had a list of
the companies that weren't exporting jobs. It's hard to find any company that can be supported.

2. Limit it to boycotting companies that outsource core competencies
Because on that list from Lou Dobbs you're talking virtually every company that exists. Boycott Union friendly Safeway? uhh no it's either that or Wal-Mart in my area.

3. I don't shop at Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Jiffy Lube, or Outback
because the all give large amounts of money to republican candidates. Check out http://www.opensecrets.org and click on the "Who's giving" link. All kinds of good information.

10. Boycotting doesn't work when you are boycotting everything
I'd rather spend my energy trying to educate and promote viewpoints intstead of trying to figure out which companies I disagree with so I no longer buy their products or services.

I remember long debates in college about Domino's Pizza and the fact the owner was anti-choice and gave to anti-choice causes. Blah, who cares, I only wanted $10 pizzas.

12. We really do need lists of which companies are good.

I seem to remember some group that had such lists -- co-op or green something. I joined once and they sent me a little booklet that rated companies on environmental records, employment discrimination, and a bunch of other stuff. Are they still around? Does anyone have the link?

13. lemme tell ya
you're gonna end up with a pretty small list of companies to not boycott, mostly local, private or independent, mostly in some sort of progressive area (organic food, sustainable living, etc.)

15. 10,000 companies isn't bad at all!
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 01:02 AM by Senior citizen
I just googled and found it. Here's the link:

http://www.coopamerica.org/

They want $20.00 to join. Co-op America's lists of 10,000 companies is called their "Green Directory," so I remembered it partly right.

While you don't get the hardcopy or access to their online directory unless you're a member, their website does list companies that they are featuring, and most of them are online also.

I think I'm going to contact them and see if they have a reduced rate for low-income seniors. If not, I may have to wait a while, but I think it is more important now than it was back when I joined, precisely because, due to all the predatory buy-ups and force-outs by big corporations, there are fewer companies that can be trusted and they need our support to survive.

On edit: Corrected a typo, and added last 7 words.

Second edit: They also link to a free site that lets you look up a company you're thinking of patronizing and finding out what they're really like. Here's the link:
