Outside bakery, Martin kicks off run for Congress
ST. LOUIS — There were no custom Ed Martin cookies when the Republican lawyer officially announced his bid for Congress Wednesday night in the parking lot outside of McArthur’s Bakery in Lemay.

The candidate didn’t even jump out of a giant cake.

But there was a healthy crowd of several hundred supporters eager to have Martin take on Democratic incumbent Russ Carnahan for the district that runs from south St. Louis to Ste. Genevieve.

Chief among his backers were Randy and Dave McArthur, the baking brothers who have voiced their ire about Carnahan’s position on cap-and-trade legislation, a proposal the cake makers say would hurt small businesses.
