He accepted the Nobel Peace Prize as a challenge. And accepted it with something we don't usually see from a U.S. leader-genuine humility.

If he can take the challenge as a spur to move in a less militarist direction and to clearly break with the impearlist ambitions of the last administration, it will be an occasion of even greater pride.

And those who work for and push for peace throughout this country will be part of the effort to meet that challenge. The goal is the end of war, and we can reach that goal together.

2. He showed more grace and humility today than Bushie showed in his entire existance.

3. PO's acceptance was
classic Obama. And, boy did he get surprised!:wow:

Cha --

This morning, Michelle and I awoke to some surprising and humbling news. At 6 a.m., we received word that I'd been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009.

To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honored by this prize -- men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.

But I also know that throughout history the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes.

That is why I've said that I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations and all peoples to confront the common challenges of the 21st century. These challenges won't all be met during my presidency, or even my lifetime. But I know these challenges can be met so long as it's recognized that they will not be met by one person or one nation alone.

This award -- and the call to action that comes with it -- does not belong simply to me or my administration; it belongs to all people around the world who have fought for justice and for peace. And most of all, it belongs to you, the men and women of America, who have dared to hope and have worked so hard to make our world a little better.

So today we humbly recommit to the important work that we've begun together. I'm grateful that you've stood with me thus far, and I'm honored to continue our vital work in the years to come.

Thank you,

President Barack Obama

Totally humble. Funny how the RWers think he is arrogant.

4. Can you imagine waking up to that?
Oh and by the way Mr. President, are you sitting down? Good...

I was awake and got a breaking news tweet, so I then had to stay awake until at least one other person I knew was up so I could spread the good cheer. That was fun.

9. The prize serves to emphasize the right direction he's started to move in
It's as big a message as any the world can send to President Obama and to us, the American people. If any of us wanted some indication of what we should do the Nobel Prize is giving us the message we need.

I hope it spurs Obama into working towards peace in the world even more than he would have done otherwise.

I know great people don't start off aiming to be great. Most of them get pushed into it by circumstances, or even by doing something they dedicate themselves to. Ghandi, Mandela, FDR never set out to be who they ended up being or to change the world quite so much, but they did stick to doing what they believed was the right thing. I truly hope Obama will be that kind of person.

12. It's a huge message to the world..and that's
what those on the rw get and are horribly upset about.

And, other's who are upset ..don't get.

11. Hopefully all of them.
And praising the award doesn't mean not being committed to build movements against continued involvement in Iraq AND Afghanistan.

15. A good start is Bush's favorite war. The war on terror
which in reality was the war for oil.

13. He should have declined the prize
He hasn't earned it. You know, EARNED it.

Talking about peace is lovely, but how does talking stop entrenched ideologies?

14. So what does not talking accomplish?
Diplomacy accomplishes many things. Entrenched ideologies give way to expediency when it comes to survival. Agreements happen in the political world all the time. And among mortal enemies.

16. Oh he definitely has earned it.
His talking about peace coupled with genuine concern and efforts at diplomacy is already working to stop entrenched ideologies. And it's all too obvious if you objectively look at what he is doing.
