Coverage by very conservative paper, The Daily Reflector:
... Edwards, the wife of Democratic vice presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. John Edwards, spent more than an hour outlining the differences between presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry and President George W. Bush.
She devoted several comments to the war in Iraq.
"Success in Iraq is based on three things: It's based on political stability, economic stability and then you need security," she said. "So you need all three. The president has paid attention to one and nothing to the other two. He hasn't had a plan, and it's not clear at the present time that he has a plan."
International cooperation has also suffered under Bush, Edwards said.
"It's harder to get international involvement today (in Iraq) than it was six months ago, and it's harder than it was three months before that," she said. "You can't just keep waiting for some magic thing to happen." ... But the Bush administration is not offering effective strategies for Iraq, the war on terror or domestic issues, Edwards said.
"This president has absolutely nothing to run on. It's a mess in Iraq. He has not succeeded in capturing the man who murdered thousands of Americans. Our economy is in much worse shape. And on health care? He has not done anything."
Instead, the Bush campaign is focusing on character assassination," Edwards said.
"(The Bush campaign is) trying to make John Kerry an unacceptable choice for the American people," Edwards said. "They can't run on anything else. They're conducting a fear and smear campaign. We're going to run on John Kerry's record, and we're going to try and point out what John Kerry will do differently. It's not good enough to say this president has failed, but for John Kerry to say what he will do."
On the controversies over Kerry's and Bush's military service: "I think it's important to know what choices candidates made as adults, but the rest of the squabble is a complete distraction of the issues," she said. ...
