Bush National Guard Speech: How The Hell Does He get Away With This ???
President's Remarks to the General Conference of the National Guard Association of the United States

Las Vegas Convention Center
Las Vegas, Nevada

<snip>

Bush: As the General just said, you've had many famous Americans in your ranks, including men named Jefferson, Madison, Lincoln and Truman. Nineteen individuals have served both in the Guard and as President of the United States, and I am proud to be one of them.

1. He's wrong on two counts
He didn't "serve" in the national guard, he did a DISservice to it.

And he didn't "serve" as president, either -- only disservice as a Supreme Court appointee.

2. I just don't get why they
would receive him so warmly. He wasn't on of them, he was a phony. I just don't get it.

3. They were probably anxious to see him
...Because they've been waiting for him to show up at a Guard post since 1972.

In Rare Rebuke, Bush Faults Putin's Moves to Centralize Power

<snip>

In an unusual rebuke of an ally, President Bush said yesterday that he was concerned that Russian President Vladimir Putin's moves to centralize power could undermine democracy.

Putin's announcement on Monday that he would seek further control over regional governments and the legislative branch has been widely interpreted as an attempt to use the fear of terrorism as a justification for imposing tyranny. Bush's silence for two days led to widespread questions about his commitment to promoting freedom in all parts of the world.

Bush, in remarks at an East Room concert and reception honoring Hispanic Heritage Month, said he is "concerned about the decisions that are being made in Russia that could undermine democracy in Russia."

"Great countries, great democracies have a balance of power between central government and local governments, a balance of power within central governments between the executive branch and the legislative branch and the judicial branch," he said. "As governments fight the enemies of democracy, they must uphold the principles of democracy."

5. Ack! I was SURE they'd clean this one up...
The Guard has been fighting for America since before America was a nation. From its birth in the 1630s, the Guard protected the early colonists and helped win the War on Independence. Today, each of you carries on the great tradition of those early citizen-soldiers, who picked up muskets to defend our freedom. Weapons have changed, and so have our enemies, but one thing remains the same: The men and women of the Guard stand ready to put on the uniform and fight for America. Our country is stronger, our freedom more secure because each of you has volunteered to serve. (Applause.)

When did we go to war against INDEPENDENCE? Didn't we fight FOR it in the War OF Independence?

*SIGH* I'm have a REAL hang up about US PRESIDENTS being "up" on certain details, like using the actual names of our wars instead of just any old thing that slides out of their mushy mouths. It's a personal problem. :cry:

6. Names for Wars
"War on Independence" <-AAAARG

If Bush had called his "War" The War on Al Quaeda rather than the War on Terror he might actually have been expected to finish the job. An unwinnable, frightening war is Karl Rove's wet dream.

8. I loved Kerry's address to the Guard convention however......
I thought it was great that they were luke warm towards him. I believe it angered him a little bit and caused him to really lay out the truth about the pResident.

It was interesting to see the guards sitting on their hands and not wanting to applaud. "How can they support a non-military guy over a true blue fighter" I am sure thats what Kerry had running through his mind as he was giving his speech.

In the end, I think he will win converts from the guards family members who do not want to see their loved ones shipped overseas to fight in a senseless war.

All in all a great speech for Kerry, it inspired his base (those that saw it).

9. The guards' reaction
might also be due to being tentative to show support for Kerry amongst peers. I watched some of that speech. I would be surprised if Kerry didn't surprise them with his knowledge and his feelings of patriotism and concern for security. They liked it when he talked about plans for how to get the guard more involved in homeland security.
