BREAKING MSNBC: Lieberman will join pukes in filibuster unless PO is removed.
Edited on Tue Oct-27-09 12:49 PM by Parker CA
Just broke on MSNBC. He will join the piggies in their filibuster of the procedural vote that requires 60 to move the bill forward in the Senate.

I'd bet that either he has brokered a deal with the piggies and plans on switching to GOP affiliation, or he's posturing in an attempt to broker some deal with the Dems for some personal advantage or chairmanship.

Way to go, Joe. You now have the chance to be forever known as the man who stopped a public option from moving forward.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's playing this card only to gain further stature with committee responsibility and to look like he's the man when he ends up voting with the Dems.

It was Obama. Further, it was Obama who campaigned for Lieberman when Holy Joe was being challenged in the Democratic primary. Those are facts, deal with them!

98. Look Babara Boxer and Joe Biden also campaigned for him in the primary
It is extremely unusual to stay neutral when their is a primary challenge - only Feingold and Kerry did. Given the attacks they received from him when they had Kerry/Feingold out this was a moderate response by them. Obama supported Lamont in the general election. (Even in the primary, Obama's help was muted vs Bill Clinton's. In August right before the primary, Clinton headlined a huge rally for Liebermen and gave the best speech ever heard him give supporting another politicians - it was actually about Lieberman. He also records audio for automated calls.

54. Lieberman would STILL be a Senator. Obama didn't make him a Senator.
We would just have 59 Senators caucusing with the Dems in the Senate instead of 60 and the same issue would still be happening.

Like Lieberman wouldn't have been a bigger dick the other way. He's a dick either way.

114. Really? You've never forgotten?
The race was in 2006 when Obama was also running for Senate.

"Ned Lamont has waged an impressive grassroots campaign to give the people of Connecticut a choice in the November Senate election. He has a vision for his state and country, and his campaign has been about presenting that vision to Connecticut voters.

Ned Lamont and I share a commitment to bringing our troops home safely from Iraq, to achieving energy independence, to helping all our citizens realize the American dream, and to empowering the American people to reclaim their government. Ned Lamont’s campaign is about delivering on these goals in Washington.

The November 7th election is right around the corner. Please join me in supporting Ned Lamont with your hard work on-the-ground in these closing weeks of the campaign."

17. This isn't the filibuster to vote on the bill, only to move the bill forward for vote with
the PO in it. If he stands with the GOP, we don't have the 60 to move forward.

Not sure where this leaves us. One thing for sure, LIEberman needs to be stripped of any influential position he holds.

I would go for sure. I call on the CT Democratic Party to give Lieberman 48 hours to pledge to vote for cloture, then pull out all of the stops against him. Absolutely disgusting that one man would allow himself to stand in the way of the greatest potential we've ever had to move forward with a public option health care bill.

79. It's also a nice ploy for a self-absorbed, whiny,
powerless nobody to get some attention from the White House and get booked on every major political show on TV.

Seriously, Leiberman, who was once our VP nominee and who also placed himself front and center on the campaign trail by endorsing McCain now doesn't get asked about anything. Nobody cares.

So, maybe, this is a ploy for some attention....unfortunately, we'll all have to be exposed to that whiny drone of his for the next couple of weeks. Yuck.

58. Just passing on the news from MSNBC. I hope there has been some confusion in the story
getting to their desks and then breaking, but it may be that LIEberman is now in deep negotiations with the Dems to vote with them if he gets his wish list of power grabs. I say they promise him everything, pass the bill, and then strip him of it all and toss him to the curb.

of all the attention Olympia Snowe Job was getting.

Look at me!!! I'm Jumpin' Joe Lieberman. I campaigned with McCain and stabbed my old pal Bill Clinton in the back during impeachment. I practically threw the election to the Repugs in 2000 Florida with my "count all the military ballots" meme. I'm a slimy little moralistic gnome and proud of it, man. I don't care about nobody or no party except the one that takes care of me - Joe the Bummer. I hope all you insurance companies are taking note - I'm the one that is saving your profits so I expect you to save my ass by contributing to Lieberman Party.

Wheeeeeeeee!!!

66. Lieberman: I'd Filibuster Final Bill Over Public Option
Edited on Tue Oct-27-09 01:17 PM by IndianaGreen
Lieberman: I'd Filibuster Final Bill Over Public Option

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) told reporters today that he would in fact filibuster any health care bill he doesn't agree with--and right now, he doesn't agree with the proposal making its way through the Senate.

"I told Senator Reid that I'm strongly inclined--i haven't totally decided, but I'm strongly inclined--to vote to proceed to the health care debate, even though I don't support the bill that he's bringing together because it's important that we start the debate on health care reform because I want to vote for health care reform this year. But I also told him that if the bill remains what it is now, I will not be able to support a cloture motion before final passage. Therefore I will try to stop the passage of the bill."

An independent who caucuses with Democrats, Lieberman is among a group of about a dozen moderate senators whose support Reid will need as Senate critical health care votes near.

Lieberman said he's open to the possibility of supporting a plan set up and run by the states. Lieberman said he is "open to discussing that."

Read more at: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/27/lieberman-id-vote-against_n_335627.html

Lieberman: Sure, I'll filibuster a health care reform bill I don't agree with. And I don't agree with it as it is now.

In other news, Sen. Blanche Lincoln today spoke out against the public option and the bill Sen. Reid (D-NV) announced yesterday. But revealingly, she did not say one way or another how she would vote on cloture (where the Dems need 60 votes), which is the key question.

I'd say it's assumed that, if the Dems are going to win this, several of the centrist and conservative Dems will vote no on the bill itself (where they only need 50) but yes on cloture (the key vote where they need 60).

What will all these faux-Democrats end up getting to give their vote on cloture? I say promise LIEberman the world, pass the bill, and then take it all away.

93. I think the confusion here is that there are 2 points where filibusters are possible ....
... you can prevent a bill from coming up to debate with a filibuster and you can prevent a bill from being voted on by filibuster.

My understanding is that Lieberman said he would not filibuster to keep the bill out of debate, because he wants to see the debates and amendments, but he would filibuster to keep the bill from being voted on if he didn't like the bill in it's final form.

So is Lieberman willing filibuster? Yes and no depending on which filibuster.

108. The REALLY bad news is this:

The DLC New Team
Progressives Need Not Apply

When Obama started picking his cabinet,
I KNEW Election 2008 was a crushing defeat for Liberals.

Evan Bayh is up for re-election in 2010.
I hope The Left can organize nationally and fund a progressive challenger to target Bayh.
Even if we can't unseat him, we should be able to make his Primary nasty enough to send a message to The Democratic Party Centrist Leadership.

Unfortunately, Rahm and the White house have co-opted most of the large Left Leaning national organizations like MoveOn who now help the Centrists further marginalize The Left.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeremy-scahill/rahm-emanuels-think-tanke_b_185203.html

Never-the-Less, I will be donating to Bayh's opposition, and encouraging everyone else to do so.
There MUST be some Liberal in Indiana willing to challenge this piece of Centrist shit.

are there any doubters about Lieberman's true character and intentions?

Too many posters tried to spin Lieberman last night to put him in the best possible light, so that the rest of you wouldn't get upset and start calling your Congressperson. That's their tactic, keep you in blissful ignorance so that you don't react and get angry. Get angry!
