Conservative media echoed White House spin on Iraq; downplayed bleak intelligence estimate

The outlook for Iraq's future security and stability is bleak, according to the National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which was prepared for President George W. Bush by the Central Intelligence Agency's National Intelligence Council (NIC). As The New York Times reported on September 16, "he pessimistic tone of the new estimate stands in contrast to recent statements by Bush administration officials, including comments on Wednesday by Scott McClellan, the White House spokesman, who asserted that progress was being made." Not surprisingly, conservative members of the media have been echoing Bush administration spin this week; in so doing, these conservative voices are denying the realities of the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

The NIE was prepared for Bush in late July by the NIC, a center of strategic thinking within the U.S. government that is under the director of central intelligence.

The Nation's David Corn: "By the day, the situation is growing worse."

The Washington Times' Tony Blankley: "No, it's not."

The Washington Times news article headline: "Kerry dismisses progress in Iraq, talks of 'chaos'"

The Wall Street Journal editorial: "The first thing to stress is that Iraq is not in 'chaos'"

In this September 17 editorial, The Wall Street Journal editorial board purported to "sort out where we are in Iraq." Yet it downplayed the NIE and emphasized that a "crucial point is that the Shiite majority remains committed both to elections and to a pluralistic Iraq."

The media will not inform the people regarding the total disaster in Iraq!

2. Walter Rodgers on CNN
Has done at least two pretty devastating pieces the last couple of days about what a colossal out-of-control mess Iraq has become.

4. It's the media,
and the readership who keeps going back for more, no matter how many times they get it wrong.

I don't get it, but then again, I hate being lied to.

5. Most Americans Do Not Know Our Human Cost in Iraq!
I've joined a group who are posting to local forums the actual human cost of this insane war. We post from www.icasualties.org each day to show the death totals and the outstanding horrors of the day. This has truly been unnerving to those who don't want to face reality.
Anyone else doing this?

8. Bush Has Hidden the Human Cost of Iraq
This site does make them have to acknowledge that this war has cost our troops dearly. He always skims over the horrors to our troops as he talks the political points. I've had people accuse me of being obsessed with the negative side of Iraq to which I reply this is a military site to inform us what is going on in Iraq. They don't argue back again. the site is www.icasualties.org

10. not exactly true....it's TV and gasbaggers
both Time AND Newsweak ran big articles saying that it's WORSE than anyone thinks over there

you're right, though about the opinion leaders: they're the ones who keep the government approved line out there, predominating the information flow

that's why the concentration is on Kerry campaign unrest, the substance of the CBS MEMO, rather than Bush's actual lack of service, the LIES from Swiftboaters for Sludge, rather than THEIR lies, etc.

it's the same thing that's been going on since Reagan, actually

11. Even NPR is getting in on the act

NPR did a special this morning on how our partner Saudi Arabia is helping the U.S. fight the war on terrorism. It was a Bush PR piece if I ever heard one. They had a few counter points, but the entire topic is playing to the Bush re-election campaign.

13. Yeah, I tried to tell my friend who is a Big
NPRer that they were slanting rightward and she just kept talking about all the good shows she hears on there.

So, I guess the news is right and then they have some progressive segments!
