Whew..what a night! I saw John Kerry at a rally tonight in Albuquerque and here is how it went:
It started off bad. My friend bailed on me at the last minute...I really wanted to get a good space so I went 3 hours before the speech. People were already waiting in line, and we had to get in lines depending on what color our ticket was...there were 3 or 4 different colors...the color of our ticket determined where we’d be in the audience and it stunk ‘cause it turned out the “white ticket” people, which included me, got the shaft and got the lousiest spot in the audience. If I had just had a red ticket I would’ve been at the very front right near the stage
Anyway, assorted NM politicians came out and spoke, then Governor Bill Richardson came out and told us that General Wesley Clark would be with us at the rally! The crowd loved this and cheered loudly. As Bill was speaking, a person in the audience fainted (undoubtedly from the heat – nicely enough the volunteers were handing out bottles of water and packets of sunscreen)...The person was taken away, and hopefully is in good health.
Finally, after trying to stretch his speech as long as possible because things were running a little late, Bill announced Kerry was here. The “theme” of the rally was health care, and a local woman with diabetes spoke about all the problems she has had with the system. She then announced Kerry. He came out, along with Wesley Clark and the crowd roared with applause.
Kerry came up to the podium, and introduced Clark. Clark gave a fiery speech about the way Bush has messed up things in Iraq. It was short, powerful, and got the crowd worked up. Then it was Kerry’s turn!
Kerry talked a bit about how the UNM Lobos whooped the Texas team, and then joked that Texas was going to get whooped again in the election. A hot air balloon was flying behind us, and Kerry pointed it out. Albuquerque has the largest hot air balloon festival in the world, and Kerry said that when Bush/Cheney come to town, they rival the festival in hot air. Kerry also spoke to the crowd a few lines in Spanish, and the crowd really reacted to that and cheered him.
He spoke about a wide array of things, from Iraq (he pounded Bush hard on this....and involved the crowd with the W stands for Wrong), stem cell research, science, women’s rights, the economy, and of course, health care. He spoke strongly, confidently, and he seemed very relaxed...not at all stiff or uptight like the media portrays him. The lamebrain media can say whatever they want...but Kerry is a great speaker.
At one point, someone in the audience yelled out, “I love you, John!” and he said back, “I love you too and I going to give you a big hug after this!” Aw.
When Kerry finished and the people started to leave, I rushed up to the front to try to get a better view. I managed to worm my way up near to the front, and by that time Kerry was off about 20 feet past the barricade thing talking with some of his people...all of a sudden Wes Clark rushed to the crowd, all smiles, and the crowd went nuts. He was signing things for people and shaking hands, and with my hoarse voice I shouted out, “Wes! Wes, you rock!!!” He looked my way and waved, which was so awesome because it’s WES CLARK! He’s like a rock star. A woman in front of me was freaking out and said she felt like a groupie ‘cause she loves the General so much.
Finally things were dying down but there was still a fairly sizable crowd behind the barricade, and Kerry was still talking to the people...We started doing chant after chant, “Kerry! Kerry!”...then “John Kerry! John Kerry! John Kerry!”...then “President Kerry! President Kerry! President Kerry!” “Elect Kerry! Elect Kerry!” Kerry kept smiling and waving at us and blew kisses at one point. Finally, John Kerry waved at us one last time and got in the van along with Wes.
That was my night and it was great...I met many different Kerry supporters and made some new friends...I got within 5 feet of Wes Clark and got to tell him that he rocked..I got to see Kerry closer than I ever had before, and after listening to him I’m more impressed than ever ...it was just great. WE MUST ELECT KERRY, and Wes Clark has gotta have a role in his administration!
A group of people I was talking with asked me to canvass with them on Saturday and I agreed...I feel so pumped and energized and ready to put KERRY in the White House! I hope all of you that have the opportunity to go to a rally take it and go...it was so fun. The End
