Elizabeth Edwards said Bush failed to plan for the Iraq war or its aftermath.
FAYETTEVILLE -- Elizabeth Edwards came to this military town Thursday and found common ground with veterans who want better treatment for troops.

"This is the kind of a feeding trough, when you think about it being paid with taxpayers' dollars," Edwards said of the contractors, mentioning Halliburton, the company Dick Cheney ran before he became vice president. Halliburton and a subsidiary, Kellogg, Brown & Root, have been awarded billions of dollars in military and oil-service contracts.
The Bush administration failed to plan for rebuilding Iraq or dealing with rebellion there, she said. "Failure to focus caused us to not be in a position to crush the insurgency."
Edwards, daughter of a career Navy officer, was fluent in the language of military concerns such as special health plans, veterans' services and disability benefits. Although polls show that voters think Bush can better handle the Iraq war and terrorism, Edwards won a convert for Democratic challenger John Kerry.
