The Right to Vote Under Assault in 2004

Septemeber 16, 2004

Four years after the 2000 presidential election fiasco, America's voting system remains dangerously disorganized and unprotected. Although Congress allocated nearly $4 billion for new voting equipment and reforms, less than half of the money has reached the states. As voters head to the polls this November, the potential for malfeasance, fraud, and purged votes remains disconcerting.

*Millions of voters must still contend with flawed punch-card ballots.

The Caltech/MIT Voting Technology Project concludes that although punch-card ballots "have the highest rate of unmarked, uncounted and spoiled ballots over the last for presidential elections these ballots," 32 million voters will be forced to use them this November.

*Partisan election officials continue attempts to disenfranchise voters.

After thousands of eligible voters were purged from voting rolls in 2000 due to a massively flawed ex-felon list, Florida election officials tried to use a similar purge list this year. Although the list was tossed out, county officials remain free to purge voters based on their own – currently unknown – criteria.

*Americans must beware of voter intimidation and suppression efforts already under way.

Florida state police have investigated elderly African American voters for "fraud" issues. A state official in Michigan working on behalf of the Bush-Cheney reelection team is on record saying that his team can't win unless the black vote in Detroit is suppressed. Voters should be aware that these and other efforts are well under way to keep them from registering their support this November.
