His wife told me a story that changed my mind.
Years ago, like the 2000 selection to be exact, this couple was over here and we watched the election returns together. They went home late--really late--and we were sick about the reports that had come in about bush "winning" in Florida.
Fast forward a few months to February, after bush's inaugurauction and I asked them to go into NYC with me to a protest. I was horrified at their reaction, or at least the wife's, who said, "Ummm, we don't do protests." She went on to explain she would feel awkward standing on the street holding a sign.
I really was hurt. I thought, "Man, we need to be out in the streets so bad." Those were the early days of protests and sometimes only 70 people would show up. And secretly, I found it hard to look at my friends the same way again. I thought, "Yeah, they're Democrats but not very sincere Democrats."
So today I asked the female half of this couple over to pick up some fresh goodies from my garden. As we were saying goodbye, the subject of what her husband was doing with the tons of money he is making these days came up (he founded a very successful business). She said, "It goes straight out the door! To the Kerry campaign!" She said he makes out a check every week and sends it in.
This made me so happy. I can finally look past the protest incident :)
