Kerry: Draft Likely to Return Under Bush

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites), citing the war in Iraq (news - web sites) and other trouble spots in the world, raised the possibility Wednesday that a military draft could be reinstated if voters re-elect President Bush (news - web sites).

8. DRAFT?!?! Did someone say DRAFT?!?!

PRINT THE PDF: http://somnamblst.tripod.com/draftalert.pdf
HANG THIS FLYER EVERYWHERE

This is a SPECIAL MILITARY DRAFT ALERT. In May, the Seattle Post Intelligencer published an article about a document they received through the Freedom of Information Act. It was revealed that the SSS is currently “designing procedures” for the implementation of a “Skills Draft” and had held a top-level meeting on it with Deputy Undersecretaries at the Defense Department. This draft would change the essential mission of the Selective Service and require “virtually every young American”, male and female ages 18-34, to register for the Skills Draft and list all the occupations they are proficient in to fill labor shortages throughout nearly the entire government. If enacted, the Skills Draft proposed in this FOI-recovered document would change America as we know it.

The Pentagon is suffering from immediate labor shortages. Recently, the inactive Ready Reserve had to be called up for the first time since the Gulf War to fill 5,600 job shortages in the Armed Forces. DoD said in the recent IRR callup “20% of the call-ups are truck drivers, 12% are supply specialists who can use a computer to track supplies, 10% are Humvee mechanics, 7% are administrative specialists and 6% are combat engineers” (USA Today, August 8, 2004).

Although Congress would have to approve new legislation to create a Skills Draft or reinstate the combat draft, Family Circle reported in its July 13 issue that Karl Rove has polled GOP members of Congress in September 2002 to see if they would support the President if he requests reinstatement. The Republicans said they would vote for the draft. They would likely support the new legislation needed to create the Skills Draft. While Bush and the Republicans are of course keeping the return of the draft and the new skills draft as quiet as possible, many anti-draft organizations have recently begun warning of a “Coming New Draft”.

The Issue Paper document was revealed through the Freedom of Information Act by Seattle Post Intelligencer reporter Eric Rosenberg, who wrote a partial explanation of it that was printed May 1, 2004.

Rosenberg’s article was edited, however, and some key points about this document were omitted in the published article. What follows is a full explanation of the document and links to the document itself.

The Secret Issue Paper can be viewed at: http://blatanttruth.org/selective_service091304.pdf

Can you link me to the original thread you created a few days ago? It was a summary/overview of this new document and it laid out a complete timeline for the draft based on your reasearch and understanding of all the documents and minutiae involved. I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

I think using this is great...but...How is:

"If George Bush were to be re-elected, given the way he has gone about this war and given his avoidance of responsibility in North Korea and Iran and other places, is it possible? I can't tell you."

saying that a draft is likely under Bush as the headline states? Did he say something else about this...the quote above is all I see.

14. Every time I talk to a voter
That I know has kids either at draft age or just short. That is my first line of attack. Amazing how heads perk up when you mention this.

I usually start with something like: "So will your son/daughter sign up or wait to be drafted after Bush is elected in Nov.?"

The usual response is "WTF?", then a simple explanation of the facts (9 of 10 active duty US Army divisions tied up in Iraq, SSS future plans, etc.).

This REALLY REALLY works with parents.

33. I am going to get kicked around but....
Doing the research on this whole draft issue, tell me if I am missing something here.

The most recent bills regarding the resurrection of the draft are

H.R. 163
and
S 89. right?

Hopefully I am missing something, because if these are the last bills, then this is a bad move.

Here is why,

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d108:HR00163:@@@P

There has got to be something I am missing in the motive, not on the part of Kerry mind you, but on the part of the sponsors of this bill.

I would appreciate non attack input on this, clearly I can't, or rather am not seeing the big picture admittedly.

50. Most red-state Americans are chickenhawks
and will not support Bush if they feel they will have to go to Iraq.

I've been wishing for a long time Kerry would take this approach. Fear is all the sheeple seem to understand, and the possibility of a draft is very real if things continue on this path.

There seems to be a disconnect between the war costs and the average American. Once the average American feels it might 'hit home', their views on going to war will change. There's a huge difference between being able to just sit back on your couch and say 'send them in', and the reality that you or your loved one may be sent in. The pictures on the evening news take on a new meaning. All of a sudden the car bombs, explosions and chaos start to have an emotional impact... because you yourself could be sent over to deal with that.

Kerry must build this into a theme .. force Bush to talk about his plans for invading Iran.. force Bush to show his true agenda. Then let the American people judge if they are willing to bear that cost.. if they are willing to live in an America of endless war.
