Unbelievable and weirdly so: AWOL story bumped Niger docs story
In its rush to air its now discredited story about President George W. Bush’s National Guard service, CBS bumped another sensitive piece slated for the same “60 Minutes” broadcast: a half-hour segment about how the U.S. government was snookered by forged documents purporting to show Iraqi efforts to purchase uranium from Niger....

2. Interesting to know Josh Marshall's involvement w/ CBS
He was skeptical about the AWOL documents early on. He must wonder if his story will ever run.

I've read tin foil speculation elsewhere (don't remember where) that the purported Rove document sting was not just to distract from *'s record, or to taint & muddy the AWOL story, or get back at Rather. It was to stop CBS' coverage of Niger forgery.

3. Josh still thinks the AWOL memos are forged
“This is like living in a Kafka novel,” said Joshua Micah Marshall, a Washington Monthly contributing writer and a Web blogger who had been collaborating with “60 Minutes” producers on the uranium story. “Here we had a very important, well reported story about forged documents that helped lead the country to war. And then it gets bumped by another story that relied on forged documents.”

where is the proof?

5. They may not be forgeries but they are discredited
Edited on Wed Sep-22-04 04:29 PM by Lucille
If you take Burkett at his word, he destroyed the originals and submitted copies. The copies cannot be authenticated. You cannot analyze paper and ink, or make a definitive judgments about the signature.

Furthermore, Burkett did not have the ability to authenticate the originals. He doesn't even know who gave them to him.

And he admits he lied about other crucial aspects of the memos.
