3. one's true the other isn't

Bush will bring back the draft.

The recession however didn't begin until 2001.

2. actually that's not what Kerry said
This is what he said --

Answering a question about the draft that had been posed at a forum with voters, Kerry said: "If George Bush (news - web sites) were to be re-elected, given the way he has gone about this war and given his avoidance of responsibility in North Korea (news - web sites) and Iran and other places, is it possible? I can't tell you."

Big difference.

Frankly, I think saying Bush will bring back the draft is just as much of a scare tactic as Cheney saying a Kerry election will help the terrorists.

Not that I'm saying Bush won't bring back the draft.

5. It's not a scare tactic to say it's a possibility
Especially when Kerry was asked a question.

It's not like he dropped the bomb out of the blue. The voters are asking this question. Edwards was asked this in WV too.

the scare tactic I was referring to isn't being practiced by Kerry in his statement

9. All I can tell you is that this mother is scared to death of * reinstating
the draft. That issue alone would cause me to vote for Kerry. Of course, I have 100 other reasons, but the threat of my children being drafted to fight for Halliburton is the absolute most important one.

11. There is conscientious objector status
People should do that if they don't believe in killing. That's what I did at the end of the Vietnam War.

And this may sound a little harsh (so I apologize in advance, I'm just not sure how else to put it) but if someone does believe in killing then they must be prepared for the results of their belief.
This is no comfort for a mother, I realize, especially if her children are not conscientious objectors.

14. freedom of religion about covers it
So they're kind of screwed on having to recognize it.

I may be optimistic.

Now it may be that you'd end up in prison as happened to c.o.'s in WWII , but there is entirely too much precedent that allows conscientious objection in our legal system for them to not allow it.

Somehow I don't see the Amish or the Mennonites or Quakers backing down on this one & what goes for them goes for the rest of us also.

15. One has to have a long record of belonging to one of those sects.
My family is Methodist. We don't qualify for that status.

16. There are other ways
You used to be able to get it if you could prove that you hadn't just thought the idea up the day before. That is, you don't have to belong to one of those particular denominations. I didn't. My father was a c.o. in WWII, which helped my case. Stuff like that helps. That is, evidence that the individual has been thinking about this stuff for awhile. Family members who have taken similar paths is evidence.

War Resister's League has some info and another site I can't remember the name of at the moment.

Until then I still think you're overly optimistic about this cabal letting anybody except their own kids off the hook.

20. Links
This has a rather detailed article and provides contacts:
http://www.duckdaotsu.org/resist.html

This is the organization that David Dellinger (who was a c.o. in WWII) was associated with. I haven't explored the site, but I'm guessing there is stuff on it.

This one may be the best
