Compassionate Conservatives are Neither
Everything a Conservative used to stand for is by the wayside now. They used to stand for fiscal responsibility (think largest economic turn around in history) and keeping America from being entwined in Nation building and becoming the World's Police. They never stood for compassion. Now they are not sure what they stand for but it sure isn't Conservative or Compassion.

4. is it wrong to assume
that that conservitives (at least these particular versions of them) are no longer for CIVIL rights either? I feel that way...the disenfranchisement of voters, the fact that they think gay marriage is the worst thing on earth--and so on and so forth...

5. Bush has given conservatism a bad name...
I am NOT a conservative, however, in my opinion, the Bush administration has given real political conservatives a bad name through his sofistry. While his words indicate conservatism, his actions clearly do not. "Neo-con" has effectively come to mean "NOT-con". He has hijacked the conservative agenda for his own purposes, and used false piety and emotionally-charged religious biases to garner support for his regime. He has added "religious extremism is conservatism", to Orwell's "War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength," creating a fantasy world in which truth and lies are indistinguishable.

I would add that most of them really are fiscally conservative in the purest sense. Who among the Mal-Administration hasn't made a ton of coin on this war while our nation is asked to make the ultimate sacrifice in blood and treasure?
