MSNBC Poll -- 88% DON"T believe the polls they see.......
Damn Voters
By PAUL CAMPOS
Sep 23, 2004, 05:05

MSNBC has just conducted a poll in which it asked people if they thought opinion polls accurately reflected actual opinions. The network informs us that 88 percent of those polled answered "no."

This sounds like a surreal joke, but then stories about contemporary politics often do. There is no polite way to phrase this: When it comes to politics, the average person is an idiot. Depressing evidence for this claim can be found in a recent New Yorker essay by Louis Menand, which surveys the political-science literature regarding why people vote the way they do

snip

But the cold fact is that tens of millions of Americans don't fit that description. They normally pay no attention to politics; whatever political beliefs they do have tend to be wildly inconsistent; and they base their votes on frankly irrational factors.

These are the crucial swing voters in the crucial swing states, who will decide who should occupy the world's most powerful political office for the next four years.

4. Good point at the end of that article
It always seems to baffle me and actually scare me that the true people who decide almost all Presidential elections are the ones that are still undecided. Like their aren't enough reasons already to vote for Kerry? Unbelievable. Kinda like how the people who control the art market know the least about art (they just have the most money and will pay tons of money for a piece of art that in technical terms sucks as a piece of art).

3. What an insulting article
Most people I know have coherant political opinions. Are they talking about the mid-west?

People don't trust polls because what they see and experience around them is sooooo different.

6. What an insulting post about the Midwest
Most people I know have coherent political opinions and I live in the Midwest (and the majority know how to spell coherent to boot!) . Do you have any personal experience with the Midwest? I'm guessing not because you put a hyphen in the word and there isn't one. Leave your East Coast elitism at the log in please.

7. I'm West Coast by the way
Red states are red states. I have been through the area (drove quickly). Maybe you and your friends are different? I know there are some very decent people out there, but...

Red states are red states.

I do know that out here well over 10% of people have coherent (sp?) political views.

9. Red states in the Midwest?
Like Illinois? Minnesota? Wisconsin? Iowa? Missouri? Michigan? Oh yeah, real red. Illinois has one Republican holding a statewide office out of 8 and that's our moderate treasurer. Minnesota elected Wellstone Senator, the first and only 60's radical to be in the U.S. Senate. Russ Feingold voted against the Patriot Act and he is most likely going to be re-elected for his third term. California, certainly the most liberal state on the West Coast, has who as their governor? Interesting case you have against us Midwesterns being pure reds.
