In Vermont and New Hampshire, state Republicans are not afraid to fight dirty. Last time around it was the New Hampshire Republican Party jamming phone lines during Democratic efforts to get out the vote (for which Chuck McGee, former Director of the NH Republican Party, faces federal charges and possible jail time). In 1996 the Vermont Republicans sent out false letters in Democratic candidate Gerry Gossens' name before the primary, and Gossens lost by only 91 votes.
After the "success" of the fraudulent letter-writing strategy,
both Vermont and New Hampshire Republicans are at it again. Last week in NH the Republicans sent out a letter with John Lynch's forged signature (another federal offence), and in VT they sent out postcards which stated that candidate Harold Giard is against a woman's right to choose. This is clearly not the case, per Giard's own words: "Reproductive decisions are between a woman and her doctor. Ruthless politics are a longstanding New Hampshire tradition. We dance around it — but New Hampshire has long been a hot bed of right wing abuses. It's like McCarthyism never quite left the Granite State. Historically speaking, this is largely due to the friendship of Joseph McCarthy himself and the late William Loeb, longtime publisher of the Manchester Union Leader. Long after McCarthy fell from grace and drank himself to death, Loeb kept the drumbeat of the extreme right going in his front page editorials, slanted news stories and manipulative headlines....."
