I would respond with something like:
"First off, given this administrations countless failures in Iraq, the very notion that I or my Democratic colleagues are hoping for things to go bad in Iraq is not only offensive, it is also completely absurd.
Second, I think it should be pointed out that things are bad in Iraq, right now. It is regretable, I admit. But I do not relish in the daily death tolls nor do I watch with interst as innocent people are being killed in a war based on misinformation, distortions, and outright lies by this adminstration.
It almost makes me wonder, Mr. President, why exactly you would be accusing someone like me of rooting against our troops, who are fighting bravely in Iraq as we speak. Let us not forget that you threatened to veto a bill last October that would have provided necessities such as body armor for our troops. This very motion was voted down by every single Republican in the Senate.
To be quite frank, your record as President and your record as Commander in Chief are quite sameful and are an embarassment to the nation.
The most offensive part of all of this is, in an effort to look solid and unwavering, you recently stated that, knowing what you know now, you would have done everything regarding Iraq, the buildup to war, and the aftermath exactly the same as you have.
Mr. President, what message are you trying to send to our troops, who are dying daily because of your failed policies?
