will america change the channel?
honestly, i think that's what it's all about.

the media covers politics like it's all a game, all political maneuvering, soap opera, campaign strategy, funding, polling, horse-racing show about who will win, win, win.

it's like it's all another survivor/big brother/apprentice show. previous contestants like dean and kucinish have been banished from election island.

we all would like to think that elections are about issues, but having an open, honest debate about anything of substance is no longer possible when then media covers everything, including issues and debates, like just another part of the horse race. if a candidate raises an controversial view on an important picture, the media will focus on why they did it now, in front of that audience, is he trying to pick up votes from that segment, will it cost him in that state, is this the doings of his new campaign hire, blah, blah, blah. it's never about, has he identified an important issue to you, and will his position help you and help america. who would care about that!

besides, issues like iraq are on the other side of the world for most americans. and the deficit doesn't hit anyone's pocketbook right away, at least not that they can see directly, so all that those issues matter is what they see on t.v. about it.

seriously, the way the presidency most directly impacts most americans is simply that, for the next four years, either bush or kerry is going to be on the tv a lot, and the media will be talking about them a lot. so they will decide whether the bush show or the kerry show is the more entertaining.

i think that's why so many went for bush in 2000. gore was painted as "wooden", which translates to boring t.v. change the channel. bush is entertaining. even his abusing of the english language is fun!

and frankly, i think the public has to decide, do they want to watch four more years of rah-rah american bush is great sycophant media lying and spinning anything and everything to make our fearless leader look good, all of which they are starting to see through? or do they want to change the channel and take a chance on this kerry guy, knowing that the media will probably turn that into a four or eight year scandal series one way or another, lying and spinning anything and everything to make kerry look like he's bad for the country?

hopefully, america has had enough of being lied to by a media bent on promoting a president who doesn't deserve such treatment, and will change the channel, so they can be lied to by a media bent on destroying a president who doesn't deserve such treatment.

1. It's the ultimate reality show
"I am voting Kerry off the island / out of the house / as the weakest link because I want to see what kind of crazy, dangerous stuff Bush will get us into next"

2. I heard another hypothesis
yesterday claiming that Kerry is throwing the election.

I do not immediately discount this, because it seems to me Kerry came out of nowhere to win the nomination, as if it were just the next act of the puppetmasters' show.

It almost seems as if when he got that 5- to 10-point lead a couple of months ago, he began thinking, "Uh oh, what do I do to erase this advantage I have? I know. I'll make my Vietnam service and post-service record the main topic of my acceptance speech."

3. Good rant
Television will destroy freedom, not al qaeda. Somebody needs to teach * that. No wait, someone has to first teach him the fucking alphabet.

What are the chances that * will say 31 to the question-
"Mr. Shithead, how many letters are there in the english alphabet?"

4. I look at it this way
You can hear on the radio about how many jobs are created, etc, etc, but it doesn't mean beans to you if you are out of work and there is no one hiring. That's the case with my husband, who is a master mechanic. There just isn't any work anywhere, be it dealerships or independent shops. That means that these places are hurting-one fellow has let all his mechanics go, and told my husband he hopes there will be enough work for him to keep the place open. You can bet that these people are ignoring what they say on the idiot box-they know better.

Our local Guard unit is back from Iraq. They went over with inadequate body armor and other supplies. I know, because there were local fundraisers to supply them. I've talked to Guard families, and they aren't feeling rah rah Bush patriotism right now-they've heard from their loved ones about what is really going on. Think they are believing the news on TV?

I heard on the radio yesterday that Kerry is pulling out of advertising in Arkansas and Missouri (DU set me straight on that-it is for one week). Pundits say it is because "Kerry knows these states belong to Bush". Funny that I've seen as many Kerry signs as Bush signs on my way into work. In 2000, it was all Bush signs and maybe one Gore sign. Sorry, pundits, but my reality shows something very very different.

Nobody I know is watching the news and believing it. And they are not all wild eyed liberals by any means. They are just looking around and realizing that their reality isn't reflected with what is on the boob tube.
