WTF? RE: Hurricane...Bush just said
"The armies of compassion are standing by ready to help" on MSNBC.

They cut to a clip of him saying the above about hurricane Jeanne.

Who in the hell are the "armies of compassion"???

I SERIOUSLY don't understand why this guy is even polling well with 25% of the populace.

2. He is using language for effect
Compassionate Conservative = bush (or at least that's the lie)

armies of compassion = conservatives

He's trying to equate the people who help out with himself .

5. Have you ever read the book "Compassionate Conservatism"
By Marvin Olasky? (with a foreward by Herr Bush endorsing the philosophy)

I did before selection 2000 and the funny part is...the whole concept of "Compassionate conservatism" by definition, was to turn all welfare and federal aid responsibility over to the churches, and religious institutions, taking it out of the Government's hands.

It was truly revolting.

11. Until Bush I had never seen a hurricane "spun" for political purposes
It just amazes the hell out of me...

On CNN this AM "Chad" the RW weather man was blathering on about a new "weather pattern" being behind all these unusual storms (although he did mention that they don't have any data about the last "weather pattern" of this type because records weren't kept at that time LOL)

Maybe I am getting whacky but it certainly looked like a preemptive strike against speculation about Global warming being at fault.

8. Olasky is a head case
If you read between the lines, he proposes turning that work over to religious institutions so more "lost souls" can find their way to Jesus... In other words... it was meant to be a recruiting tool.

10. that book is definitely interesting
I read it about eight years ago. Initially, it was the church that began the institutionalization of charity. It was the Calvinists, with their doctrine of sinful mankind, who decided that the needy must be vetted to see if they were truly WORTHY POOR and not just sinfully lazy before charity could be administered.

Prior to that neighbors had helped neighbors, people just stepped in to lend a helping hand where it was needed.

But church people could see the potential for sinful, lazy people to pretend to be needy.

So they began the process of formalizing charity. Now, billions is spent on the administration of charity and on making sure that it doesn't go to any UNWORTHY folks. More money is spent on administration than on actual aid.

Oh, it's a very interesting read.

13. It was definitely one scary read!
Everytime I heard the term "compassionate conservatism" bandied around (like it was a good thing) before the selection I wanted to slap somebody!

9. learn his language
Armies of compassion is Bushspeak for church-goers. People who are motivated to help others because God says so; not those horrible bureaucrats who help people because it's their job. Seriously. That's what the term means to those guys. You see, we don't need liberal do-gooder bureaucracies to help out people when they are down -- we can rely on good, honest church folk.

Excuse me while I vomit.

Great post. And I agree. It amounts to Religion For Sale. You get a dinner, we get your "soul". Or so they think. I've read about these Missions, where people figure out how to circumvent the system.

16. Googling "armies of compassion" plus "bush"
Turns up 4670 hits. I guess it's a well-developed meme. Here are a few snippets from the first Google search page.

"I will lead the federal government to take bold steps to rally America’s armies of compassion."

"President Bush’s ‘Armies of Compassion’ continue to further encroach the line between church and state."

"Armies of compassion my ass: Bush to give $1.25 billion to religious groups Wednesday."

"Hoover Institution Weekly Essay - Bush's Armies of Compassion Are Inching Forward."

"Bush urges broadcasters to 'rally armies of compassion.' "

"President Bush's Armies of Compassion initiative is designed to support charities that provide vital social services for millions of disadvantaged Americans."

17. However, the Armies Of Compassion will NOT raise FL Minimum Wage $1
Looks like the unwashed unchurched and unRepublican will just have to make it on their own before, during AND after Jeanne blows through town.

19. Since the worst disasters of the Florida hurricanes
have only been in red Florida counties, you bet there's lots of armies of compassion standing by to make sure Bush's people get to the polls. I'm packing up for my third evacuation in a blue county. I trust that since Bush's God and mine are polar opposites, that I will return and find my house intact and not have to rely on Bush's armies of compassion.

Kind of reminiscent of Landover Baptist's classic "Get Your Ass To Church!" campaign.
