14. The Estonians did that to help win freedom
from the Soviet Union back in the early 90s -- they did a Hands Across Estonia. (I'm Estonian-American).

Even if we couldn't do it across the US, we could try to do it state by state or county by county. It might be a tad difficult getting a human chain across the Rockies.

Maybe the way to start is to get local Dem groups to hold 'Hands Across...." events in their areas to build interest and publicity.

31. I did the original "Hands Across America" to raise money for ... uh ...
Edited on Fri Sep-24-04 11:04 PM by gauguin57
... whatever ... I still have the plastic visor.

I'm ready to do it again ... for Kerry.

It might sound silly or idealistic in the 21st century, but I thought that Hands Across America idea was a pretty cool one... getting people to hold hands across the country? GENIUS! Didn't quite work (there were some gaps in the western desert regions or something) ... but where it did, it was a cool thing to see -- like a big ole "I'd like to buy the world a Coke" commercial!

32. OK ... it was to raise money to fight hunger and homelessness, and it
was held in 1986.

http://www.fact-index.com/h/ha/hands_across_america.html

Hands Across America was a benefit event staged on May 25, 1986 in which millions of people held hands for fifteen minutes along a path across the continental United States. Participants paid ten dollars to reserve their place in line; the profits were donated to local homeless charities.

"On the afternoon of Sunday, May 25, 1986, more than five million people joined hands to form a line that stretched 4,152 miles -- from New York City's Battery Park to a pier in Long Beach, California. This much-hyped mega-event, called Hands Across America, was intended to raise money to fight hunger and homelessness." <1>

16. Marching around one's precinct talking to voters
is the better effort spent, I think. It is certainly where the emphasis in the campaign is....canvassing and phone-banking, canvassing and phone-banking.

Identify voters and get them to vote. Same old boring stuff...but is where we will win this election. It is tried and true. Get thee on the cavass teams! We've finished our precinct and are moving into adjacent precincts to help.

It is enerqizing and heartening. If you don't have a headquarters near you, call the closest one. There are organizers in every headquarters for each state....especially important to help in the swing states.

I live in Orange County, Ca (enough said) and for the first time that I can recall, Dems have actually organized a rally.
On October 9th, we will meet at Hart Park In Orange and then we will walk to the historic Orange Circle. I can't believe it, and I can hardly wait. See, miracles can happen.
