From Washington Post: Tying Kerry to terror tests rhetorical limits
Leading Republicans attempt to tie Kerry to undermining war effort
Analysis
By Dana Milbank
Updated: 1:21 a.m. ET Sept. 24, 2004

Vice President Cheney tore into the Democratic nominee, calling him "destructive" to the effort in Iraq and the struggle against terrorism.
• On Tuesday, Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said terrorists "are going to throw everything they can between now and the election to try and elect Kerry." On Fox News, Hatch said Democrats are "consistently saying things that I think undermine our young men and women who are serving over there."
• On Sunday, GOP Senate candidate John Thune of South Dakota said of his opponent, Senate Minority Leader Thomas A. Daschle: "His words embolden the enemy." Thune, on NBC's "Meet the Press," declined to disavow a statement by the Republican Party chairman in his state saying Daschle had brought "comfort to America's enemies."

• On Saturday, House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (Ill.) said at a GOP fundraiser: "I don't have data or intelligence to tell me one thing or another, I would think they would be more apt to go somebody who would file a lawsuit with the World Court or something rather than respond with troops." Asked whether he believed al Qaeda would be more successful under a Kerry presidency, Hastert said: "That's my opinion, yes."

• The previous day in Warsaw, Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage said terrorists in Iraq "are trying to influence the election against President Bush."

1. It's not like they can run on their record.

It's not like they can say things are better for Americans.

It's not like they can point to even one piece of legislation that did more good than harm. They have soiled everything they've touched: healthcare, the environment, national security, education, the economy. Wherever BushCo has intervened, things have gotten WORSE.

Have some pity. They have GOT to make Kerry look bad.

Because if you look straight at Bush/Cheney...you get sick.

2. What limits?
They'd accuse Kerry of being Saddam Hussein if they thought they could get away with it.

I can see it now, High Noon, Rush Limbaugh.

"Now Friends I have something to say here that some of you might consider shocking. But I want you to remember that the opinions on my show are grounded in an unstoppable quest for the truth. Sometimes that truth takes us in some scary directions. But we have to stand up, and face some ugly truths.

"You ever notice how you've never seen Saddam Hussein and Senator Kerry in the same room. As a matter of fact, Senator Kerry has refused to meet with Saddam Hussein. I can't think why, it seems like they'd have a lot in common. There must be a reason why Mr. Kerry won't meet with Saddam. Could it be that they are one and the same person?

"It would put Senator Kerry's opinions on the war in a lot more understandable light. Back when he thought that Iraq would win, he supported the war. Now he opposes the war. Now I'm not saying I have any proof or certainty, but it makes you think doesn't it?
"

You never know what's coming.

Bryant

3. When did dissent become a crime in this country?
That is the tone being set by George Bush, Dick Cheney and Republican leaders. This is the politics of fear–the mainstay of modern Republican campaigns. Because they’ve had four years with nothing to show, the party in power in resorting to tactics that set a dangerous precedent–attempting to affect the results of this election by spreading fear.

These are the statements of dangerous men, who neither understand nor defend the constitution–chilling acts of desperation–from men who desecrate our Bill of Rights in the name of holding on to power. Not only are these statements false, they are a perversion of political discourse. Americans have fought and died defending the rights of every citizen to speak freely. And that is the ultimate hypocrisy of these Republican politicians.

Based on this post, I found a quote from Eisenhower about dissent and put together a flyer/ad. I hope the tone of this is right. Please let me know. If you think it has any power, please pass it on.
