DU BRAINSTORM: Ideas to spread the "Two-Faced" message.
Edited on Sun Sep-26-04 06:53 AM by Skinner
PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE MESSAGE BEFORE YOU RESPOND.

I've been talking to the other admins about this "Two-Faced" message, and we think this could be a great opportunity for the members of Democratic Underground to make a difference in the election. I don't know exactly what the DNC is hoping to do, but it looks like they want to spread this message in a viral, guerrilla-marketing, grassroots kinda way.

And we've got lots and lots of people who can help make it a reality.

With this in mind, the DU admins have decided that we're going to make this a priority, and we're going to use all of the grassroots power we have to try to spread this message.

We have a few ideas of our own, but we thought this effort would likely be more effective if we took advantage of all of the great minds we have in this community.

So... What can we do to spread this message?

We've got a cool, attention-grabbing graphic. We've got a very clear and concise message. We have lots and lots of people. We can do this online and offline. We can do web, email, flyers, stickers, clothing, you name it. The possibilities are literally endless.

So, what are your ideas? Brainstorm. Post in this thread. Start other threads to discuss it. Go nuts. This effort can be bottom-up and top-down. Organized and unorganized. Orderly and chaotic.

What are your ideas?

And, if you're already tired of talking and want to start taking action on your own, here are some graphics you can use. Post them on the web. Print them on flyers and plaster your hometown in the middle of the night. Copy them into email and blast them to all your friends. Tattoo it on your forehead. Whatever. It's up to you.

TO BE CLEAR: The purpose of this thread is to discuss ways to spread the message that Bush is Two Faced. The purpose of this thread is NOT to discuss new or different messages that you prefer. If you do not wish to help us in our efforts to spread the message, or if you think this whole thing is stupid, please do not post in this thread. In order to help focus the discussion, I am instructing the moderators to delete off-topic posts. Thank you for your understanding.

18. Television can still be unconventional.
A 5 second tv ad. No audio. Nothing but the two-faced image still. I can see this being every bit as effective as the home page 'hijack.' Also, the production costs and the tv time itself would probably be relatively cheap.

The trick would be getting local media to allow it.

2. Just got back from my covert operation in Bloomington, IL
We copied off 100 of those flyers, and put out 20 of them so far tonight. I plan to do more tonight.

Lemme tell you- I put those suckers in some VERY high-profile, VERY hard-to-get-at places. Very busy streets, duct-taped to lampposts where one would have to walk quite a ways, and across a ditch to get to them to take them down, and on the side of a low-overpass for a VERY busy street on the Illinois State Campus- those seemed to be too good of placement to NOT be vandalism. I was paranoid, watching for cops the whole time.

It was fun- very covert, and it felt like I was really DOING something to help the campaign.

Some advice for others wanting to do this- go the extra mile. Put these flyers in places where lots of people will SEE them, but not many will be able or willing to take the time to GET to them. Make them jump across that ditch or scoot past the rabid dog or hang over a ledge. And place them so that when they see them, they have no choice but to drive on past and just think about it, or else have to take a full five-or-ten-minute detour. Put in the time and plan carefully.

By the way, here's a link to another graphic with "TWO-FACED" at the bottom if that's more of your thing:

http://somnamblst.tripod.com/2faced.pdf

Have fun! And remember to put in the extra time that others won't! Don't make it easy for them to tear down. I.E. try to stay away from sidewalks, intersections where someone might just jump out of their car and tear it down....think very carefully.

Print it off. Make tons of copies. Put everywhere and anywhere. You guys in swing states, we need this especially badly there.

Tuck them in magazines anywhere there is a waiting room. Or in new magazines no one has purchased yet (be careful though). Put them in public restrooms. Staple to telephone poles. Put on kiosks or community message boards. Put up in apartment complex laundry rooms and mail rooms. Public laundromats. Leave a few everywhere you frigging go.

Think high-visibility and several of us need to contact the freeway blogger about this.

115. Another Good Place...
...is to stick them inside the "voter's guides" that the Republicans are sending to churches throughout America. I managed to get one via snail mail from a Repub friend and retyped it. Says it's from "Citizen Leader Coalition," whatever the heck that is. Doesn't matter, because Repubs love anything with Coalition stuck on it. Note the code words/phrasing in the guide, e.g., citing the guide is necessary because of the war on Christianity, throwing up the red flags of Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton, etc.

2004 Election Voter Guide Concerning Key Moral Issues and the War on Christianity.

ISSUES

Gay Marriage

Bush Opposed
Kerry Favors

Partial Birth Abortion
Bush Opposed
Kerry Favors

Restoring voluntary prayer in the public schools
Bush Favors
Kerry Opposed

Assault on Mel Gibson for making film about Christ
Bush Supports Gibson.
Kerry participated in Left's assault on Gibson, suggesting possible anti-Semitism even though Kerry had not seen film.

Assault on Boy Scouts for belief in god and not allowing homosexual Scout leaders
Bush supports Boy Scouts' stand
Kerry opposes Boy Scouts' stand

Asking for God's blessing on America
Bush often asks God to bless America in his speeches.
Kerry attacks Bush for mentioning God so often.

Judges
Bush says, "We need common-sense judges who believe our rights are derived from God."
Kerry insists on judges who support the ACLU's radical anti-Christian, anti-God, anti-family agenda. Along with Senator Ted Kennedy, leads the Left's effort in the Senate to block President Bush's federal judge appointments.

Overall Record
President Bush does not vote on issues before Congress but, based on his publicly stated positions, would receive an 85% conservative rating from the AMERICAN CONSERVATIVE UNION if he did.

The highly respected, politically-neutral National Journal rates Kerry the most liberal U.S. Senator in 2003 -- more liberal than Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton.

4.  BE AFRAID ........sugg. text to be placed beneath "two face".......
Edited on Sat Sep-25-04 06:00 PM by henslee

and here's why I think its appropriate...
1st, it mocks *, commenting on the thinly veiled subtext at the core of his campaign. It's as if its a pro-bush poster, telling voters to live in fear.

2nd, it communicates on a 2nd level, telling voters to bve afraid of this man.

BE AFRAID

I think BE AFRAID is simple, direct and pretty much says it. Not too wordy, very graphic.

49. Yeah, I get it, OUR version of flip flop. And yes , the graphic
Edited on Sat Sep-25-04 06:29 PM by henslee
alone is representationlly "two faced" and extremely dnyamic a la the famous "Andre the Giant" guerilla posters but... it feels like its missing something. First off, semantically, I don't think Bush is two-faced. He is one-faced, unabashed liar. I think McCain is a good example of two-faced-ness.

Now this is just one person's opinion but I think that the graphic, stand alone without text is fine... but it is a little obtuse and artsy and seems like it would be connecting to that person who already is anti-bush. This is a fine effect not one that seems to be hitting it out of the park.

And not to be picky but while the graphic with the words "two-faced" below it is alright, it seems flawed in its redundancy -- the "two-faced" notion is already represented by the graphic. To basically restate it via text does not thrill me.

That is why, I think the way to go is appropriate, complimentary text below the graphic -- not neccessarily "BE AFRAID" but something.
Much like those Robbie Canal (or whatever his name is) guerilla posters that were famous in L.A. They were those groteque black and white paintings of politicians, e.g., Reagan and Bush, with bold text beneath them. Robbie created quite a stir with those.

Having shared the above, I will now be a good DU footsoldier download the graphics and pass them along via email and hardcopy.

Thanks to the artists and Skinner for getting this thing going.

9. "flip flopping" is changing one's opinion in the face
of ever changing circumstances.

"Duplicity" is stating agendas based on complete and utter falsehoods and maintaining them regardless of circumstance*.

Which is worse. . .?

*see Healthy Forests, Clear Skies, No Child Left Behind, & Help America Vote for references of totally disingenuous nomenclature versus actualization .

Oh, and IWR to "maintain the peace" would certainly qualify as well.

15. Two Questions
First, was it the administrators who were responsible for everyone's avatar becoming Two Faced a few days ago? I thought it was a bug or a hacker, but was it you guys messing around? ;)

And second, is the idea to spread JUST the graphic, to let it speak for itself? I think that would be incredibly powerful. You get on the bus, there's a picture of Two Faced Bush lying on the seat. You get off the bus, it's taped to a lamppost. You go to work, someone left it in the copy machine and next to the fridge in the break room.

28. Guys
I've been experimenting with something.....if you are putting the flyers where you have to fold them in half (such as CD bins, books (but leave a bit sticking out so it will be seen), etc, then fold them in half with the graphic side OUT and the top half (without two-faced) showing. I think print makes someone immediately think it is an ad, but I folded one in half and only looked at the top half and it is weird looking. You can tell it is a graphic of some kind but you want to immediately unfold it to see what picture it makes.

I think that would grab more attention in situations where you have to fold them.

The postage paid envelopes is a GREAT idea! Gonna start using those instead of recycling them!!!

30. What about cars? Taping it onto the inside rear window?
I'm taping mine onto the inside rear or side window. However, I've heard that cops can pull you over for having a blocked rear window.

I knew somebody who actually got a ticket because they had a political sticker on their window, and the cop apparently didn't like the candidate.

Anybody have any advice about this? I live in San Francisco, and here the cops would never pull me over for this.

141. You know those big American flag decals?
There were tons of them after 9/11, plastered on people's rear windows. They look opaque from outside the back window, but are transparent from the inside. As far as I know, they're legal, or else people couldn't sell them.

Does anybody know what would be involved in creating those, and how much it would cost?

55. How about library books
and book exchange books; also couldn't stamps be made to stamp bills you pay and letters you write; also could stamp craft paper and wrap presents with this paper, using black ribbon for the bows, of course. Several different sizes of stamps would be useful, too. Could stamp all size envelopes you mail. They can't refuse to deliver because of this, can they?

Also, wouldn't Cheney's face be great too? He's actually more scarey than Bush sometimes. Well, I guess they're about equal. How about playing cards, with Bush on one set and Cheney on the other?

Using the graphic as a TV ad would be great. Just the face, no commentary. Also could be used on signs for national and local political rallies. I could see a lot of these signs at universities.

Mugs, baseball caps, t-shirts, bandanas, etc. Big moneymaker and will disseminate widely. Oh, and armbands that can be worn anywhere. Will sorta look like mourning bands, but will be wide enough for the image to show. These could be worn around the head as well as arm. Could also be tied around bookbags, handbags, etc.

Also, decals, bumperstickers, etc. I like the "Be Afraid" message, but think the face by itself is very effective.

OMG, would be perfect if masks could be made in time for Halloween. What a fantastic statement that would make.

Well, I think I'm temporarily out of ideas. Will keep thinking.

By our colors will you know us. Black and white whenever we go out, corsages of tiny black and white curly ribbon pinned to our clothing. This is a great idea. Of course, this is easy for me. I don't go out often. I imagine it could get tricky for someone working nine to five.

Even if it is my idea, I love the idea of black armbands with a decal of two-faced.

70. Iron onto clothes, hats, canvas bags, pockets, ties, etc... -- Here's how
It's a long story as to why I know this, but you can iron-on images in different ways depending on the fabric you're using.

For 100% cotton, you can use "transfer paper" from office supply stores, which leaves a stiff, plastic sort of coating over the image.

For polyester, some printers can take special "sublimation ink" (certain Epson and Canon types); this comes out soft, but I'm not sure how dark it'd end up even on polyester.

There are also pens made by "Sulky," available in craft stores, which create an iron-on image just by drawing over an image on paper.

(You could also use fabric paint and a stencil.)

(Or, just print it on a sheet of self-adhesive address labels and put it on your pocket or collar.)

Edited on Sat Sep-25-04 07:41 PM by mzmolly
differing ones too, so that each time someone sees this image, they will be interested in finding out what "this" one says. ;)

For example:

BUSH SAYS WE FOUND THE WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION..."We found the weapons of mass destruction. We found biological laboratories...for those who say we haven't found the banned manufacturing devices or banned weapons, they're wrong, we found them."

...BUSH SAYS WE HAVEN'T FOUND WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION "David Kay has found the capacity to produce weapons. And when David Kay goes in and says we haven't found stockpiles yet, and there's theories as to where the weapons went. They could have been destroyed during the war. Saddam and his henchmen could have destroyed them as we entered into Iraq. They could be hidden. They could have been transported to another country, and we'll find out."

One could shorten this on a poster to:
BUSH: WE FOUND THE WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION
President Bush, Interview in Poland, 5/29/03

BUSH: WE HAVEN'T FOUND WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION
President Bush, Meet the Press, 2/7/04]

The next one could read:

BUSH WANTS OSAMA DEAD OR ALIVE... "I want justice. And there's an old poster out West, I recall, that says, 'Wanted: Dead or Alive.'"

BUSH DOESN'T CARE ABOUT OSAMA "I don't know where he is.You know, I just don't spend that much time on him... I truly am not that concerned about him."

source:

http://www.americanprogressaction.org/site/pp.asp?c=klLWJcP7H&b=118263

I think each sign could say something different, for example I could print 25 signs, 5 different ones and post them on one street, all with a different message.

These would require a little pre-work to make them sticky, or you could have some peel 'n' stick images made up at Kinko's or a local print shop.

In order of personal risk:

Most grocery carts have those plastic flapper thingies in the kiddie seat. Stick a couple on each cart. It can be done discreetly as well, when you are heading back out to the parking lot. Home Depot, WalMart and K-mart etc. have them too.

Drive through? Anyone eat fast food? The idiot box is a nice target.

Automated bank tellers, night deposit drawers.

Parking meters.

Freeper vehicles with obnoxious W04 stickers on them.

Mostly fairly liberal--but that's mainstream for Democrats. A few are farther left in one way or another; no problem.

Then there are the usual idiot Republicans who think they're fooling somebody. They aren't, but we often play with them a while until they're tombstoned.

123. Gimmicks
Trying to push an image, get it into the culture, means you have to saturate the market. It's sorta like what has happened in the Appalachians with all these storms -- they can take a lot of rain, but once the ground is saturated, a teeny little more rain is a suddenly a lot more destructive. With an image, your first ten or twenty or hundred thousand uses of it will appear to sink silently into the earth, but once you reach that critical point, the image gets noticed and recognized and remembered.

You can speed that up by using some sort of gimmick to start. I like the animated gif of the twofaced image and its negative -- it jumps out at you and it's not hard to reproduce.

For signs to be carried, the image could be on one side, the negative on the reverse, so you can flip or twirl it for an attention-grabbing effect. It'd also be interesting to see the image and its negative used on those twirly sidewalk signs that spin in the wind.

And you know those little Cracker Jack prizes where if you look at it from one angle, you see one image, then look from a different angle and it's something different? It's called a lenticular print, and basically you take two (or more) images and sorta turn them into alternating stripes, then put the lenticular lens on it. I don't know a source, but if you can get a supplier who'll just sell you the lenses, you could make some magic signs that would stand out in any crowd. It'd be almost like having the only color sign in a room full of gray. That sort of thing gets your sign on television.

Other gimmicks could be just having the graphic associated with a chant of "two-faced" shouted like I dunno, a foghorn: Twooo-faaaaaaaaaaced. Or, maybe there's some way to piggyback on to Halloween.

that are being created here -- text variants, layouts for label stock or bumper stickers, links to t-shirts or gear, quotes like the pairs listed earlier in the thread, etc. Any of us should be able to give others easy access to the full range of material, by being able to point to on location (two-faced.com) and know that anyone who wants some of this stuff will be able to find it.

(I drove around a bit with an 8-1/2 X 11 in the back window. Got a friendly wave from someone loading a car trunk as I was backing out.)

I tried to copy and paste the 700 x 700 .gif file into a blank Word document. That didn't work so I did a "save as" and converted it to a .jpeg. I centered the image at the top of the page. I then centered below the image the following text in Verdana 48 point red colored font: Two-Faced Liar.

I forgot to set the color on my printer, so the first copy came out all black and white. It looked nice, but the red colored font makes it beautiful.

By the way, none of the text from the original image showed up when I inserted the jpeg.....the picture and text are very stark and mysterious looking! Are there any copyright issues involved?

139. stencils
These are way cheaper than printing.

I'm not advocating vandalism on walls, but if you made a stencil cut out of the image (you might have to make one for the left side, one for the right side), you could use one pattern and spray paint through it to make larger posters or cardboard sheets that aren't practical to print.

http://www.guilfin.net/gallery/?id=pxINET2755

another thought I had was to overlay text of flipflops onto the image itself, so from a distance, it's the image, but closeup, a person could read a litany of opposing stances. I could throw a sample one together if you like.

142. Self Inking Rubber Stamp Pads
Edited on Sat Sep-25-04 11:06 PM by troublemaker
Ideal for "customizing" stacks of things that are given away free, adding two face to the back of existing cards, flyers, campaign literature, etc. Also good for temporary tattoos. (Unfortunately also convenient for non-approved methods like newspapers on racks and paper money. Don't want to do anything bad!)

Self-inking stamps are not all too expensive and there ought to be places on the net that turn them around quickly. The two faced graphic is square and all the standard self-inking stamps are long and thin. The most useful (squarest) standard size for self-inking custom stamp pads is 1 1/2" x 3" (Copy Area 2 3/4" x 1 1/4")

example (not a suggested outlet, just an example):
http://rbrstamp.com/ideal-stamps.html

Google "self inking custom stamp" to shop around.

If you are ordering a 1.5x3" stamp and want to add "TWO FACED" text here are two options. (I would post these as finished graphics that can be forwarded to stamp-makers, but I don't have a sufficiently anonymous posting site at the moment.):

_____________

pic as far as it holds you for a moment with it's starkness, but like others' I thought the freepers had someone put them besides peoples names, it shouldn't hold questions that might put Bush in a good light, some wordings short but vivid in that it holds one captive in thought about the meaning behind the few words, twofaced I don't exactly feel will get to ones that are still behind Bush, it sounds a bit childish, sorry, don't get in a roar but I dont' like waffle and flip flop either, its so juvenile and I believe our minds to be much more clever than that..

Someone should put together a well-written chain letter, obviously not one that has curses or threats, just one that says, Please send this out to anyone you feel comfortable sending it out to.

It could provide a link to the graphic or provide the actual graphic itself. The text could be about Bush being two-faced, and be pretty clever, maybe humorous.

DU could then promote the chain letter, even asking people to post it in other forums.

I stapled a couple to wooden lampposts, one downtown within easy reach of anyone, another where it would be tough to get at; another on the outside of the second level of a parking garage, again, tough to get at; I put a folded one in one of those free auto sales catalogue bins; put one under the windshield wipers of a car with Kerry/Edwards stuff all over it; then two more in VERY DIFFICULT places to get along the busiest roads in town. I expect those last two to stay up for weeks.

:)

It's a real rush, doing this. I figure the cops have probably noticed them by now, and they're wondering who's doing it.

The 1500x1500 was less than 1K because it was Black and White. You could probably fit all the resolutions on a single floppy.

It's GIF, so you can print it from almost anything. I'm printing from Photoshop. Used the 1500x1500 and set it to 200dpi for an image that prints nicely on 8.5x11

You could also import it into Word, or even just load it up in a browser and print from there.

179. Here's my list
Bulletin boards: Tons of places have them - campuses, offices, grocery stores and other retailers, coffee shops etc. If you don’t want to get caught putting up a big sign, tack up a small one. Or put up a business card (excellent idea, LoZoccolo) – less likely to be taken down. Lots of places like music stores and coffee shops also keep stacks of free publications near the door – like The Onion, or auto shopper/real estate weeklies, stuff like that. Leave a stack of printouts there, but it’d be good to ask first.

The person who’s taking a two-face sign when she goes to the Today Show – great! Take them wherever you go that you might get on camera: rallies, marches, parades, marathons, walkathons, street fairs and festivals, etc.

Even better, make a mask: print the pic on light Bristol board/card stock (I’ve used it in my inkjet printer with no problems), poke a little hole on each side of the face and fasten a piece of elastic to it to hold it on.

Get a group together, put on your masks and walk around in malls and on streets with lots of traffic. Kind of a flash mob thing – just walk through with no comment and then unmask around a quiet corner. Dress in black and white.

There’s no reason you couldn’t do a TV spot. Ten-second buys are the minimum. I think networks require some kind of sound – they may have changed the rules, but I understand they don’t accept completely silent commercials – but if you animate the image, a flickering sound or other sfx would be enough, and make sense. You also have to ID the group that paid for the ad, so keep that in mind.

Most towns have at least one kind of “alternative” store - bookstores, clothing stores, health food stores, comic stores, music shops and the like. If DU can provide plastic shopping bags printed with the image, we could supply them to local merchants. A lot of us own businesses or know business owners who could also use the bags.

Every website that links to DU or has links featured on DU should be contacted and asked to link to the image. Each host of AAR should have a link to it on their blog. Or just post the link on AAR's blogs yourself, repeatedly, throughout the program, every day/evening. More people will pick up the link and take it to all the sites they regularly visit.

Many of us live in cities that provide cable access programming. Some of the shows I’ve seen are nothing but big text and graphics ranting about whatever the host has in mind. (One guy leaves up a super for a half hour that says something like “You’re all fucking idiots.” Another one sometimes just shows a dog sitting on a pillow.) We can get our own cable access programs, or ask the hosts of existing shows to put up the graphic for one whole show. We can send them T-shirts to wear on their shows.

We can also send tees to other local TV hosts, for example in Chicago a guy named Jerry Bryant has hosted a great rock show for years (and he’s on our side - we saw him at the theatre when we went to see F-9/11).

A word of caution about putting stickers everywhere: some big advertisers have done it in and been billed by the city for the cost of sticker removal. Example: Microsoft covered NYC in butterfly stickers and was forced to remove them. Worse, it got them negative publicity.

Some guerilla marketers are now using plastic static-cling stickers that are easily removed. Here’s a supplier with a price list: http://screen-printing.safeshopper.com/29/cat29.htm You can find more by googling “static cling stickers.” If DU has the resources, or access to the resources, this would be a great thing to distribute to us lackeys in the field.

Likewise if DU has the funds to get coasters printed, we could distribute them at local bars. (Don’t forget bar bathrooms when you’re putting up posters.)

An idea about stencils: apply them with chalk on sidewalks, walls, etc. so DU/DNC won’t catch shit about defacing property.

Also, there is also a new method called “Clean Graffiti” where the stenciler uses cleaning solution and a brush to etch the stencil into a dirty surface (which is just about anywhere). The stenciler is removing dirt to make the image, not applying paint, so it’s very hard for the municipality to get upset about it. Here’s a link to a story about a London grafitti artist who does it: http://www.npr.org/features/feature.php?wfId=3379017

Another DU-funded idea: postcards. A couple of years ago a company started installing mini-kiosks in restaurants, bars and stores with slots to hold an assortment of postcards that were free to anyone who wanted them. You might have seen them. They didn’t quite catch on because most advertisers did boring cards that nobody wanted. But the kiosks are still up, and it would be easy to slip a bunch into the display. Or send the cards yourself.

I’ll think of more but that’s all for now.
