In August of 2001, while George Bush was golfing in Crawford...
...John Edwards was busy spearheading the fight against terrorism. This is an Edwards press release written a month before the 9/11 attacks, and the day after George Bush got the PDB warning that Bin Laden was planning to attack, which he ignored.

"Targeting Terrorism"
Senator John Edwards
August 7th, 2001

As a member of the Senate Intelligence committee, I've become convinced that terrorism is the most important national security challenge our country will face over the next decade. That is why I am working on new ways to address the threat of terrorism.

The spread of chemical and biological weapons combined with the growth of hostile terrorist groups is a recipe for disaster. The reality is that we face terrorism not only abroad, but also right here at home.

Protecting our nation's seaports from terrorist attack presents a real challenge. Seaports are the center of our global trading network. They are also ground zero in the fight against illegal drugs, bribery and theft, illegal immigration, and a potential target for terrorists. We must do a better job safeguarding our seaports. A terrorist incident at a major U.S. seaport could cripple commerce, destroy infrastructure, and endanger lives.

Ironically, Bush wasn't the only one who ignored the terrorist threat in August of 2001. John Edwards submitted this editorial to the New York Times and several other papers. None of them would run the piece. Liberal media, indeed!

So the next time a Bush/Cheney supporter says that Edwards or Kerry is "soft on terrorism," throw this article back in their faces. Bush/Cheney have the blood of 3,000 Americans on their hands.

1. Let's send that off to
some newspapers and networks and see if they will acknowledge it now.

4. Of course they won't!

That would shatter their prized image of the heroic Chimp valiantly rallying the nation against the terrorists! Remember - only Republicans can protect us from terrorists!

If the sheeple knew that Kerry and Edwards were actually fighting terrorism even before 9/11, they might not vote for Bush, so the media says "okay, we won't go there!" The corporate media has their marching orders. Anything that doesn't sync with the Republican talking points is a no-no.

Bush's rubble-striding, bullhorn-toting episode made me sick. It's like the cavalry charging in to save the imperiled pioneer women. Always too little, too late.

7. What I think it does
though is tell them that we are aware of what they do/don't do.

8. I posted this in another thread 10 minutes ago

Too many people think * is better for safety/security. why, Why, WHY isn't the fact that 9/11 happened on his watch the issue? The August 6th PDB allows us to say "* knew", right?

This, IMO, should be THE talking point in swing states.

3. Both Kerry and Edwards were on this long before the attacks
Kerry actually wrote a book on the subject, I believe.

11. The New War, written in 96, published in 97.
Before Al Qaeda was fully formed even.

The book addressed the financing of terrorism and the terrorists criminal networks abetted by dirty international financial institutions and international government officials.

This is why the Saudi officials who own a big chunk of CNN (AOL) are making sure to smear Kerry at every opportunity and bolster Bush. Kerry has said he will hold them accountable for their role in promoting terrorism. Bush will cover up for them.

9. Heard about this on NPR
a couple of weeks ago. I couldn't find the info on their website, however after racking my brain I remembered that the story was from a Pittsburgh paper. I did a google and I think I found it. What was interesting about this story is how easy it is to walk into a chemical plant and just wonder around, without anyone bothering you. Sen. Jon Corzine had a bill to protect our chemical plants from terrorist and it passed a committee, but that's as far as it got. It could not even reach the floor for a vote!
The Lobbyist got a hold up the Repubs and decided they wanted to write the law themselves, which is what they did. It is a much weaker law with the chemical plants in charge of the oversight instead of Homeland Security!
In 2000 a lot of chemical plants gave $$$$ to the Bushit campaign, BIG SURPRISE

The Bush administration's homeland security efforts since the Sept. 11 attacks have ignored this highly vulnerable sector. The White House was silent last summer while industry lobbyists scuttled federal legislation that would have required chemical companies to address their vulnerability to attack. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Jon Corzine (D-N.J.), died in Congress without a vote, even though a bipartisan Senate committee had passed it unanimously. Meanwhile, in March of this year, the General Accounting Office issued a report urging passage of legislation to require the industry to assess its vulnerability to terrorism and, where necessary, require corrective action.

The Bush administration and its congressional allies nevertheless ignore Corzine's security solution. Even worse, the White House and Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) are pushing a separate and far weaker bill, one that would leave millions of Americans vulnerable to chemical terrorism.
