As a veteran of eight Republican presidential campaigns, I am loath to outline a strategy by which Sen. Kerry can win. My Republican colleagues who are popping the champagne corks are a bit premature. The debates hold the key for the Democratic nominee. Kerry must throw caution to the wind by being aggressive but must at the same time demonstrate the gravitas to be President. He must go on the attack without seeming shrill, but must also present a positive vision for the country. The challenger always surges at the end. If he can keep the race close prior to this surge, he can still win. God help us if he does.

He's a union steel worker and a Vietnam veteren, but he thinks Kerry is going to take his guns away so he is willing to vote against his own best interests over a fallacy. Nothing I say will convince him otherwise. It's sad really.
