Is there any evidence to support the "George Will is smart" myth?
To me he is just a partisan spinner.

I have never heard him say anything critical about the shrub administation.

Does that not disqualify him as a person who is "smart"?

1. The only evidence I can think of is
George Will's sef-assessment. Not much, but it's all he's got.

Probably why he's so arrogant about it.

2. He is smart because
he wears a bow tie and has for years (vaguely gay), he uses words of three and even four syllables correctly (vaguely academic), and he speaks in low tones and has that unctuous, condescending tone of the college professor who was teaching on the doctoral level but was forced to teach a 101 course that semester (vaguely snotty).

All in all, a rather vague character...

11. From what little I know, that about sums it up. I have read a few of his
columns while in bathrooms where no other reading material was available, and I can't see how his reputation for being bright is remotely attached to anything he says.

At least William Saffire and William F. Buckley, also the beneficiaries of way over-rated intellect, have collected some knowledge of words to cover their inability either to think or tell the truth.

13. He writes about grammar. That automatically makes him seem
smart to most illiterate Americans.

3. He was against the war
Edited on Sun Sep-26-04 08:50 AM by Leilani
& about a month ago wrote a very good editorial in the Washington Post, about how the Republicans should get back to their libertarian views on private matters...he was dissing the Fundies.

Other than that, he is very impressed with himself.

4. Yes he did...
and then he'll denigrate the Dems for similar feelings on the same issues.

He's a hypocrite. He and Safire should have a program like the Beltway Boys, discussing arcane uses of language. Then they can run into the bathroom and read Hustler. Or Playgirl.

6. He's a lot like Brooks in that area
they give a little criticism of Reps now and then to give people the impression that they're "fair and balanced" but they spend their time and energy ripping apart the Democrats in a bow tie wearing, snotty sort of way.

5. He briefly criticized the war
Edited on Sun Sep-26-04 08:53 AM by BillyBunter
about a year ago when it was obvious there were no WMDs. He made it sound ominous, as if he was personally going to take Bush to task over it, and said Bush had a lot of explaining to do. Of course, Bush hasn't explained a thing, and Will hasn't said another word about the subject.

One thing about Will is that he has no lips, yet he fellates Republicans so well. It's an amazing talent, like an armless person who has figured out a way to juggle.

7. Pliny the Elder
Anybody who quotes Pliny the Elder is smart. As George himself would say, quod erat demonstrandum. See? If you salt your speech with Latin phrases, the hillbillies think you're a genius.

10. Well he may be smart , but he is clearly without principle .
He used Mondale's debate briefing book to prep Reagan for their joint appearance . Whenever I see him speak of morality I have a mental picture of him poring over obviously stolen materials to ingratiate himself with the right wing . He is a thoroughly phony little man .
