In KC Star: Why Missourians are Voting for Bush
This was small town Missouri and I don't have the direct quotes with me. But the gist of it was that these people were sure that Bush prays before every decision he makes and they feel more comfortable knowing that God is at the helm. So the threat that liberals are going to ban God may be a potent one. Another scare technique.

On Iraq: Yes, they are having a hard time right now, but it needs to be done.

What I find interesting about this year is that both sides think the other side is completely crazy.

Oh, and Jerry Fallwell came out and said that the Right Wing Christians now "own" the Republican Party. Interesting.

1. At the dawn of the twentyfirst century, in a country that has benefited
immensely by the Western tradition of logic and reason, it is simply mind boggling that we have a segment of the population that still believes in crap.

3. And its a large segment of our population
Edited on Sun Sep-26-04 09:02 AM by MaryH
and to make it worse these people really belive that everyone is out to get them. They are very paranoid and think that people want to destroy them - and their religion.

So telling people that the Bible will be banned and that gay marriage will be allowed and that abortion will be rampant - just really sets them off.

And to make things worse - hurricanes. Its the beginning of the end times. Really.

Oh, and don't forget the teaching of evolution in the schools.

The Puritans would be proud!

5. Why is it so surprising....
....in a country where 70% of the population believes in angels?

Nothing about my fellow citizens amazes me anymore. I live in the Northeast where reason and logic still have a (dwindling)place in debate, but I must confess to a growing disgust - yeah, that's the feeling - with Muricans in the Heartland who refuse to use their brains and rely on these agenda-driven authority (church, Fox, Buschco) for everything they believe in.

7. I believe the key to Missouri

Is energizing the African American vote in Kansas City and St.

Louis. I don't know about the rest of rural Missouri but here in the

southwest we will gain a percent or two over Gore's results in 2000.

Having the gay marriage and gambling issues on the ballot in August

was a big break. The churches went all out to turn out their

congregations and will have a hard time driving them back in November.

I had hoped that The Big Dog would be able to speak for Kerry in the

churches but that doesn't look possible now. If someone from the

Kerry campaign is reading this please get Obama to appear with Kerry

in St. Louis. That would do a lot toward firing up the base.

Clay in St. Louis and Cleaver in K.C. should talk about how w is

planning to try to intimidate black voters in Missouri and to remind

them how hard they had to struggle to get the vote.

Senator bond blocked President Clinton's appointment of a very well

qualified African American lawyer to a federal Judgeship. This would be an

important point to remind voters that republicans can never be

trusted to vote for issues that are important to the minority

community.
