Pope supports Kerry Not Bush
http://www.suntimes.com/output/greeley/cst-edt-greel24.html

''War,'' the pope said on Jan. 13, 2003, ''cannot be decided upon, even when it is a matter of ensuring common good except as the very last option and in accordance with very strict conditions, without ignoring the consequences for the civilian population both during and after military operations.''

1. Wow. That's interesting.

Didn't the Vatican basically declare that any Catholic who votes for a pro-choice candidate has gone against the Church? Interesting...

On edit: After reading more caerfully, it isn't clear that the Pope endorses Kerry the candidate (Pope says: I'm anti-war, but pro-life), but he does agree with his position of the war. In fact, the Pope is to the Left of Kerry on the issue of the war.

2. No.
Some US Cardinal said that, but the Vatican took it back.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A3534-2004Sep7.html

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the Vatican's arbiter of doctrinal orthodoxy, has given Roman Catholic voters leeway under certain circumstances to vote for politicians who support abortion rights, U.S. Catholic officials said yesterday.

4. I read that, but didn't he also add
that while it is permissible for Catholics to vote for a pro-choice candidate, he couldn't see how it'd be likely. I guess the war is the loophole he was looking for.

8. The first Cardinal said that, not the second one
Burke was the cardinal who made the original statement. In response to Ratizger's statement, Burke "clarified" with the statement that it was a theoretical possibility, not a likely one.

I could be wrong, but I read it like he was trying to look like he wasn't slapped down.

3. I wish the Pope would come out
and say this. I bet this would sway a lot of anti choice Catholics!

5. The Pope DID say catholics could vote for pro-choice politicians
... and it would not be a sin for the voter.

This was clearly an endorsement for Kerry, if ever I heard one.

I believe this was about a week and a half ago.

10. This line...is chilling..in the article..
"Some estimate that Iraqi casualties are as high as 30,000. If the war goes on long enough, Americans may kill as many Iraqis as did Saddam Hussein."

11. But the GOP is saying Kerry is WRONG for Catholics.
I guess they know more about Catholicism than the Pope now.

12. In an earlier thread about the GOP trying to get Catholic votes,

someone posted a link to:

http://www.votingcatholic.org

which has a great quiz for Catholic voters (or anyone, for that matter.) After you take it, you get a breakdown of how much your views agree with the views of:

1) the US Catholic bishops
2) Bush*
3) Kerry

They've done a nice job of backing everything up with quotes, a link to the bishops' site, etc. It would really be a good exercise for any Catholic who supports most Catholic social teaching yet is thinking of voting for Bush*.
