MODERATOR: Governor Bush, two minutes.
BUSH: If this were a spending contest, I would come in second. I readily admit I'm not going to grow the size of the federal government like he is. Your question was deployment. It must be in the national interests, must be in our vital interests whether we ever send troops. The mission must be clear. Soldiers must understand why we're going. The force must be strong enough so that the mission can be accomplished. And the exit strategy needs to be well-defined. I'm concerned that we're overdeployed around the world.http://www.debates.org/pages/trans2000c.htmlKerry should press shrub on this, and ask how many of his promises in these 2004 debates will be subject to the same dramatic and tragic reversals.
Then Kerry should ask shrub where on earth he found his definition of "humble" as used in the 2000 debates.
BUSH: Well, I think they ought to look at us as a country that understands freedom where it doesn't matter who you are or how you're raised or where you're from, that you can succeed. I don't think they'll look at us with envy. It really depends upon how our nation conducts itself in foreign policy. If we're an arrogant nation, they'll resent us. If we're a humble nation, but strong, they'll welcome us. And it's -- our nation stands alone right now in the world in terms of power, and that's why we have to be humble. And yet project strength in a way that promotes freedom. So I don't think they ought to look at us in any way other than what we are. We're a freedom-loving nation and if we're an arrogant nation they'll view us that way, but if we're a humble nation they'll respect us.http://www.debates.org/pages/trans2000b.htmlKerry should ask if we may expect four more years of shrub's "humility", which he's obviously confused with "humiliation".
Kerry should ask shrub if he still considers credibility an issue important for the voters to consider.
BUSH: Well, we all make mistakes. I've been known to mangle a syllable or two myself, you know, if you know what I mean. I think credibility is important. It is going to be important for the president to be credible with Congress, important for the president to be credible with foreign nations. And yes, I think it's something that people need to consider.http://www.debates.org/pages/trans2000b.htmlThen, IMO, he should ask shrub if he's willing to submit to a polygraph test.
Kerry should then ask shrub that since he broke his promise to that 6th grade class on Social Security reform in 2000 would he point out which promises from the 2004 debates he intends to keep.
MEMBER OF AUDIENCE: Yes. My 6th grade class at St. Claire's School wanted to ask of all these promises you guys are making and all the pledges, will you keep them when you're in office? (LAUGHTER)
BUSH: I'm sure your 6th grade kids are listening and saying, these guys will say anything to get elected. But there's a record, and that's what I hope people look at. One of my promises is going to be Social Security reform, and you bet, we need to take a trillion dollars out of that $2.4 trillion surplus. Now remember, Social Security revenue exceeds expenses up until 2015. People are going to get paid. But if you're a younger worker, if you're younger, you better hope this country thinks differently, otherwise you're gonna be faced with huge payroll taxes or reduced benefits. And you bet we're gonna take a trillion dollars of your own money and let you invest it under safe guidelines so you get a better rate of return on the money than the paltry 2% that the federal government gets for you today. That's one of my promises.http://www.debates.org/pages/trans2000c.htmlRepukes are proud of shrub's "performance" in the 2000 debates. I think shrub's face should be
rubbed in the 2000 debates.
