hypothesis on polls.
The way questions are asked is wrong. Pretend you always vote for Republicans, but hate Jr's deficit, war, general incompetence and lying:

Time asks,
"For whom would you vote: Kerry and Edwards, or Bush and Cheney?" (If undecided: "Even though you haven't made up your mind yet, do you lean more toward supporting Kerry or Bush?)

FOX asks,
""If the election for president of the United States were held today, would you vote for Republican George W. Bush or Democrat John Kerry?"

CBS asks,
"If the 2004 presidential election were being held today and the candidates were John Kerry for president and John Edwards for vice president, the Democrats, and George W. Bush for president and Dick Cheney for vice president, the Republicans, would you vote for John Kerry and John Edwards or George W. Bush and Dick Cheney?"

Some people are going to vote for the Republican/"pro-life" candidate no matter what. Some people are going to "hold their nose" and vote for the democrat. But others are going to sit this one out - or leave the race blank. Those in the last group aren't given a good option.
