Voter registrations have been pouring in at Larimer County's election office as community organizations push to register as many voters as possible before the Oct. 4 deadline. As of Friday, Larimer County had 1,756 more registered voters than it had for the 2000 general election, when 191,124 people were registered to vote.

This year, the New Voters Project -- a national voter registration campaign -- is targeting voters ages 18 to 24. Joel Heyman, New Voters Project's Fort Collins campus organizer, said volunteers have registered approximately 2,500 young voters on the CSU campus and 533 at Front Range Community College. "If we were to include people over 24, we've probably registered another 300 (at Front Range alone)," Heyman said. With a local goal of 7,000 registrations between the two campuses and a national goal of 265,000 new registered voters, Heyman said the Fort Collins branch of New Voters Project has its greatest success going into classrooms where they give a brief spiel and register a whole group of students. Volunteers also canvass campuses with clipboards, and just this week, New Voters Project teamed up with local radio station 99.9 The Point to host a free show at the Aggie Theatre....
