It's about darn time

The introduction was stirring. John Kerry (news - web sites) has "stood up for cops on the street, stood up for your air and your water, stood up ... to balance the budget, stood up and fought for our veterans," said his running mate, John Edwards (news - web sites). And where did he do all that standing up? "Two decades of fighting for you in the United States Senate."
Republicans contend that Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee, has a lackluster Senate record and is trying to hide his 20 years there from voters. It's part of their effort to paint him as unqualified to lead the country. "My opponent has had thousands of votes, but very few signature achievements," President Bush (news - web sites) said in July at a campaign rally in Springfield, Missouri.
Kerry has not been a high-profile legislator, but there's no evidence he is trying to pretend he doesn't have a day job. His Senate votes and activities come up regularly on the campaign trail and he says he's proud of them.
Edwards uses them to make the case for Kerry, as he did here Monday night at a rally. In five town meetings in a single week this month, Kerry mentioned them more than a dozen times. He also alluded often to a federal police hiring program without saying that he had played a key role in getting it enacted during the Clinton administration.
