Crawford TX newspaper endorses Kerry (endorsed Bush in 2000)
http://blog.johnkerry.com/blog/archives/002965.html#002965

http://www.iconoclast-texas.com/Columns/Editorial/editorial39.htm

The publishers of The Iconoclast endorsed Bush four years ago, based on the things he promised, not on this smoke-screened agenda.

Today, we are endorsing his opponent, John Kerry, based not only on the things that Bush has delivered, but also on the vision of a return to normality that Kerry says our country needs.

Four items trouble us the most about the Bush administration: his initiatives to disable the Social Security system, the deteriorating state of the American economy, a dangerous shift away from the basic freedoms established by our founding fathers, and his continuous mistakes regarding terrorism and Iraq.

President Bush has announced plans to change the Social Security system as we know it by privatizing it, which when considering all the tangents related to such a change, would put the entire economy in a dramatic tailspin.

a one everything town! So, yes, the Iconoclast is the only paper.

I get the feeling from this editorial that folks there feel kinda personally betrayed. I recognize that feeling.

3. The opening statement is the killer:
Few Americans would have voted for George W. Bush four years ago if he had promised that, as President, he would:
• Empty the Social Security trust fund by $507 billion to help offset fiscal irresponsibility and at the same time slash Social Security benefits.
• Cut Medicare by 17 percent and reduce veterans’ benefits and military pay.
• Eliminate overtime pay for millions of Americans and raise oil prices by 50 percent.
• Give tax cuts to businesses that sent American jobs overseas, and, in fact, by policy encourage their departure.
• Give away billions of tax dollars in government contracts without competitive bids.
• Involve this country in a deadly and highly questionable war, and
• Take a budget surplus and turn it into the worst deficit in the history of the United States, creating a debt in just four years that will take generations to repay.....

and didn't I say yesterday that newspapers would come out in droves for Kerry?

23. In the Texas Hill Country here and
I've got to say I'm not all that shocked. The "Western White House" has really put folks on the spot down here. The people in Crawford and the surrounding areas are hurting economically (as so many are) and they are even more aware then others just how much vacation time * takes down here. Can't hardly miss him. Not with all of the supporting cast.

I don't want to predict that Kerry will take Texas. I'd like to think he's got a chance to win here, but I do honestly believe that Texas voters will desert * in droves.

If I see one more "Texas is bigger'n France" bumper sticker, I'm gonna spontaneously combust, I mean it! :nuke: ;)

That is the best, most comprehensive expose that I have read of the Bush administration yet! And the fact that it comes from a paper that endorsed him four years ago and carried his water in the run-up to the war and is from HIS OWN HOME TOWN is even better. They are truly pissed at being made chumps by these bastards. My hat is off to them for seeing reality and calling it what it is. Let's pray we have many more endorsements like this one! SWEET

28. Even Better is this Part
"When he finally emerged from his hide-outs on remote military bases well after the first crucial hours following the attack, he gave sound-bytes instead of solutions."

For the last couple of years, I have felt that I'm the only person who remembers how Bush spent 9/11 flying from one hidey-hole to the next, while the rest of us wondered if & where these terrorists might strike next. When it was clear that there were no more attacks, Bush finally appeared for a speech or two, & started strutting around as if he were a leader.

A true leader would have done just as Giuliani did: show up at Ground Zero or the Pentagon immediately to provide needed support & a morale boost to those who had been attacked. He had no excuse for listening to the Secret Service or anyone else who was concerned for his safety; if this worked for Churchill during the London Blitz, it would have worked for Shrub.

Instead, it only supports the accusation that Bush sat bewildered for 7 minutes in front of a grade school classroom, either wondering who would pull his fat out of the fire -- or trying hard not to soil his shorts.

57. Hillary Clinton was there the next day
She made it to ground zero the day after the attack. The Chimp was still in his hidey-hole.

And the thing about the 7 minutes that I find most telling is not really that it didn't occur to Bush himself to actually get up and do anything, but that nobody else seemed to care! It wasn't important to the people who work for him to get him and get his advice or whatever because he isn't important. At the most important period of his Presidency, his own administration was telling the country that Bush is not in charge. He doesn't run the show.

70. "When he finally emerged from his hide-outs"
Oh, yeah...my favorite line too.

You know what else really, really irks me? Not only did he hide out in Air Force One for hours, he didn't even show up at Ground Zero until September 14, THREE FULL FUCKING DAYS AFTER THE ATTACKS! My God, if that had been Gore he would have been burned at the stake. I think this is huge, but 3 years later I still have not heard one Democrat bring this up.

God, I would love to see Kerry hit him with this during the debate. "My opponent waited 3 days before appearing at the site of the horrendous attack. What took him so long? Maybe he was pre-occupied with other things, like making sure the wealthiest 2% received their tax cuts."

I want to GAG. OK, I want to :puke:

9-11 was Giuliani's finest hour, day, week, month, etc. HE and the citizens of NYC are the one's who pulled NYC up and took care of business. I'm not a fan of Giuliani's these days, but I sure was impressed with him then. * had absolutely NOTHING to do with this country getting through 9-11. It makes me sick when I hear those claims. Go shopping. Yeah right.

56. Yes, Crawford is a small town....
I've never been there because it was not previously one of the tourist spots of the state.

The "barn" is, indeed, a backdrop. Apparently Bush's house is not visible from any road. It's a new, large & energy efficient. From what I've seen of the interior, the decor could pass for the reception area of a Ramada Inn. Bland.

stressful and ugly day. But after reading this endorsement, I just felt better about everything.

Michae' Moore's movie on the garage door down there didn't hurt either. The New York Times should be anxious to publish this.

62. Posted on the Drudge Report
Edited on Tue Sep-28-04 02:13 PM by Mister K
I sent the info to the Drudge report when I saw it. Looks like they just liked to it through yahoo. That may also explain the bandwith problem.

Go Kerry!

That's almost as bad as failing to carry your home state.

64. If anyone can ever connects to the newspaper's site:
Edited on Tue Sep-28-04 02:14 PM by CornField
Please post the contact information. Not only do I want to write a personal letter of thanks, but I want to help this newspaper (which is going to take a major financial hit because of this) by gifting subscriptions to some of their local nursing homes, hospitals, etc.

67. This is all I can find for now
webmaster@iconoclast-texas.com

As soon as the site comes back up, I'll post further contact info. Since the paper is small, though, the webmaster should be able to point you to the right people.

Great idea about the gift subscriptions!

66. They're Gonna Take Them Off The "Heartland" List!
Considering that "heartland" as used by GOP refers to any place where the majority of the people will fall for Bush's pathetic "I'm Saving The Universe" BULLSHIT!

Now just like IL & MN they won't be part of "America's Heartland" anymore. Bwaaa hahaha!

Oh, Right ON!! THANKS FOR POSTING THIS, MADE MY DAY!

69. Wow!
Sounds like they don't like having him in town so much:

"We should expect that a sitting President would vacation less, if at all, and instead tend to the business of running the country, especially if he is, as he likes to boast, a 'wartime president.' America is in service 365 days a year. We don’t need a part-time President who does not show up for duty as Commander-In-Chief until he is forced to, and who is in a constant state of blameless denial when things don’t get done."

Thanks, krkaufman, for putting the article on your site! :)

Are the pundits talking about it on cable? Ain't it something that the only paper in that small town is a liberal paper.

p.s. Congrats Cocoa. Isn't it nice starting a thread and having the privilege of Skinner (or Elad and EarlG) posting in it. Cool!:-)
