Want to know why Kerry is behind? Just watch Hardball . . .
Edited on Tue Sep-28-04 06:24 PM by dolstein
If you want to understand why Kerry is losing this election, all you have to do is watch what's going on right now on Hardball.

First, of all, why is Al Sharpton representing Kerry on Hardball? Bush is represented by the governor of a swing state, Colorado. Kerry is represented by one of the most polarizing figures on the party.

And while Sharpton is doing a better job of defending Kerry than I thought he would, he's still outmatched two to one. Matthews is taking his questions for Sharpton directly from Republican talking points. On at least two occasions he has referred to Kerry as Al Gore.

Meanwhile, Owens is allowed to lie and distort Kerry's record with impunity.

I suppose I shouldn't be too alarmed, since odds are that the people who are watching MSNBC have already made up their minds. But still, the fact is, surrogates matter. If you saw Peter Hart's focus group on C-SPAN, you'd see example after example of "undecided" voters repeating GOP talking points verbatim. The GOP has succeeded in shaping their impression of Kerry far better than the Democrats have. And I think that the quality of the surrogates, and their rigid adherence to a focused set of talking points and key phrases (i.e., "flip flops") has really turned the tide. And he shouldn't underestimate the effect of bias in the media either. Even a good Kerry surrogte (and frankly, I've yet to see one) would have a hard time cutting through the barriers erected by the hostile media. Seriously -- we know Matthews hates Kerry, we know Hannity, Hume and O'Reilly hate Kerry. Is there any cable show who's hold hates Bush with the same intensity? Sorry, Jon Stewart may mock Bush, but it's "all in good fun."

1. Tweety is for Kerry. Those who pay his check are not.
I did like how he backed Owens into a corner with the Saddam or bin Laden question

4. Sorry, but Tweety is NOT for Kerry
Tweety's personal politics may be to the left of Bush, but it's pretty obvious that he loathes Kerry as a person, much in the way he loathed Gore.

11. Tweety is for his check and his benefits. His check comes from a right
wing corporate pact member facilitator. They are a part of the right wing war machine against the citizens of this country who aren't part of their war agenda and rewards of war.

2. Doesn't Tweety invite his guests?
How does Kerry step in and say Sharpton can't be on? I'm confused. . .

3. If so, isn't Matthews' choice revealing?
If Matthews is choosing the guests, isn't it telling that he'd pick Sharpton to represent Kerry, but would choose a prominent GOP governor from a swing state to represent Bush? After all, I don't think anyone believes that Sharpton's politics are a good fit with Kerry's. Sharpton is entertaining, to be sure, but he's not a logical surrogate.

This is the same thing Fox does. Pick a respectable person to represent the "right" side, and then pick a fringe figure to represent the "left" (or wrong) side.

6. That makes sense, but
Why get mad at Kerry for Tweety's choice?

7. Quite a few minority voters
think very highly of Reverand Sharpton. As for myself, I was extremely impressed by his speech at the Democratic Convention. Whatever you say about Sharpton, he fights back, he does not take any shit from anyone and he is a strong, outspoken, and loyal Democrat. I do not think he is a bad representative of the party. However, I do have to add that I have not watched this particular show yet.

12. Al Sharpton is such a loyal Dem,
that his campaign was financed by Roger Stone & the dirty tricks wing of the Republican party.

15. With all due respect, if Kerry is still competing for minority voters
at this point, the election is over.

19. I am not saying that
we are competing for minority voters--I am just trying to say that there is no need to trash a minority leader--who IS very highly thought of in the AA community. Let's avoid "eating our own".

9. Tweety voted for * in '00
and proudly has proclaimed it on his show... He also has been unmercifully bashing Kerry and his campaign as the "worst ever".

    14. Did you catch the slip about Bush and drinking?

Maher made a wise crack about Bush drinking.
Tweety told him, "you can't say that."
Soon after, Tweety said, "You can't say that. Bush has not had a drink in years."
Maher: Is that going to get you in trouble with Cheney?

    Tweety: Said something like,"no comment."

Maher did shut up! He has been sipping kool aid.
    I am through with Maher.

    17. I'm finished with them both.
They're whores, plain, pure and simple. Tweety really showed his colors tonight. Everytime I swear I'm not going to watch him again, I fuck up like I did tonight and tune in. Never again. The tv will now be off from 7 to 8 until control is turned back to a real journalist--Keith Olbermann. I just wonder how long it will be before the corporate thugs pull his show off the air like they did Phil Donahue's.

    16. Guess what? Kerry is NOT behind
The polls are not telling the truth. Now, if we can prevent them from stealing this election (and by listening to the news tonight I figure they are doing a darned good job at decimating new voter rolls) he might just winning because...hey, he is winning...

Kerry is NOT losing this election. Kill your TV and G.O.T.V. Stop letting the media whores spin this thing in Pinhead's favor in your living room. The majority is on to it all and is mad as hell and we WILL vote these mofos out.
