Wavering Voters Anti-Iraq, Wary of Kerry

By RON FOURNIER, AP Political Writer

WASHINGTON - In an election where most voters have already chosen sides, the presidency could be decided by a small slice of America in the mushy middle — wavering voters who are more likely than others to question President Bush (news - web sites)'s honesty and think the war in Iraq (news - web sites) was a mistake.

An Associated Press study of 1,329 "persuadable" voters, conducted by Knowledge Networks in advance of the presidential debates, suggests these people are deeply conflicted about change in the White House. While they have problems with Bush, they also have doubts about Democratic Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites)'s leadership skills and believe Bush is best suited to protect the nation.

2. DOUBTS ABOUT KERRY'S LEADERSHIP SKILLS?
The level of media-induced stupidity in this country is just ridiculous.

5. Exactly. It's pathological, I swear.
There is no other way of explaining. It's something akin to mass hysteria. On the up side, we have our own mass hysteria thing going on here, so hopefully, it works both ways.

6. The media treats Kerry like a scrambled cable TV station.
They block him at every turn.

7. This is really not that uncommon
Voters who are still wavering at this point are overwhelmingly not going to vote for the incumbent.

12. Bush has done wonders for his base
The haves have more and the divide continues to grow. The wealthy and influential are doing just fine. These are the people that should be voting for him. The 70% or so that would serve themselves well with a change, are not being convinced of the need for change. I haven't been impressed by Kerry's campaign.

15. yeah, his wealthy base has good reason to love him
The rest of his supporters will, as you suggest, vote against their interests; they are devoted to their man, even though he is contemptuous of their intelligence and dissmissive and destructive of their needs and problems.

I haven't been particularly impressed with Kerry's campaign either, but there is still time to go to step things up. The media is not helping.

17. Welcome to DU, NoahSJ. I do take issue with your logic, though.
People should not, and many do not, vote only in unenlightened self-interest. For example, some people are doing quite well financially and have personally profited from the "Bush Tax Cuts" (including our Pres. & VP candidates), but they have grave concerns about many other issues facing the country and Bush's inability to address them. These people should NOT be voting for Bush, and they won't be.

11. I have a NYTimes letter from today right here for these folks
To the Editor:

You point out that the Democrats have not run a campaign that blames President Bush for the 9/11 attacks, which happened on his watch.

President Bush failed to stop 9/11, failed to act decisively on 9/11, and failed to catch the man behind 9/11. Then he has the audacity to suggest that he's the only one who can protect us.

Sept. 11 is the center post propping up President Bush's campaign. I say knock it right out from under him.

13. It's the media, the media, the media. Some voters probably haven't even...
**seen** Kerry, other than a sound-bite or two via the corporate-filtered media. And what they have seen of Kerry has been thoroughly tainted by all the right-wing bloviation of the talking-head whores.

It is the media that's shaping the information.

The one's in doubt will see him spar with (w),the junior president in the debates and they will know that JOHN KERRY was destined to be the
44th President of these UNITED STATES!

22. Does anyone remember the Arnie (gropinator) debate
Edited on Wed Sep-29-04 12:40 PM by cally
All he did was show up and act semi-coherent. After that, the race was essentially won because voters were re-assured that he knew something. I think Kerry will re-assure many voters in the debate.

Note: Before I get flamed, I despise the Gropinator. I'm just reporting what happened in that debate.

on edit: I really do know the difference between won and one. ;-)

23. Check this out from another similar article.. (RNC talking points again)
<<Rachelle Hinrichs said she is still making up her mind, to the surprise of her husband. She is bothered by Bush's environmental policies, described his tax cuts as silly and worries about Iraq because she does not want her brother, who already served there, to go back. But she described Kerry as someone who "keeps trying to act like a man of the people, but he's not like us.">>

Okay.. I'm still trying to figure out WHY someone, who seems to be reasonably intelligent, would think that BUSH was "one of us". Hello? Rachel, babe.. Bush is multi-millionaire in a family of billionaires. He is NOT a good ol' boy.. he's a blue blood through and through. I'd love to hear ONE story about Bush actually helping another person or group of people. THat is something that is missing from his life story. He hasn't a bone of regular guy in him. He's a privileged, ex-drunk, cocaine snorting, overaged frat boy. Is THAT what you consider "one of us"?

26. These people
are clearly:

1. on drugs or need to be
2. dumb as a sack of rocks
3. illiterate
4. illiterate and lazy
5. psychodrama queens who love to have pollsters ask them what they're thinking

How a rational thinking human being could still be undecided at this juncture is truly frightening. Get your head out of your ass--read a few newspapers, go on a few websites and make a bloody decision. Poppy seed muffin or bran? Smiley necktie or red stripped? It's so hard...Don't make me choooose...
