Great news from Pittsburgh- Allegheny County registers 40,000 new voters

snip---

Through mid-September, the county had registered more than 40,000 new voters and thousands more are expected to file for registration between now and Monday's deadline. The new registrants include 21,859 Democrats, 9,369 Republicans, and 9,265 independents or members of minor parties.

Groups such as the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now and America Coming Together have done extensive door-to-door registration drives and had representatives at almost every summer festival or event that drew a crowd.

Better than two to one, and we need to help ensure that they vote. Perhaps this one won't be stealable?

2. According to this older article, the county had 860,000 registered voters

so 40,000 new registrations = 4.7% increase.
And 9265 new independents is pretty huge, too: an 11.6% increase.

(from April 2004:)
Wolosik said that he expects only about 25 percent of the county's 860,000 voters to go to the polls.

Among those who are newly registered in the county, the Republican Party signed up more voters than did Democrats, 2,234 to 1,696. New third-party voters make up more than 1,500 of the new voters, including 77 for the Green Party.

Over the last 20 years, the ranks of voters other than Democrats or Republicans have grown by nearly 50,000, faster than either of the major parties.

In 1984, 33,893 voters referred to themselves as "other" on election forms. Now there are 82,841 so listed, Wolosik said.
