He says either the president should fire staff for mistakes or be fired by voters
By Ray Barrington News-Chronicle
Former U.S. Sen. Gary Hart sharply attacked President Bush's handling of the war on terror Tuesday during a speech at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
...
He also said many of the administration's top officials had been trying since 1991 to see Saddam Hussein overthrown in Iraq as the beginning of an attempt to prop up the royal family in Saudi Arabia.
Hart, whose appearance was sponsored by the College Democrats and the Kerry-Edwards campaign, cited his own experience as part of a bipartisan task force on the future of American national security in the late 1990s, a group that included former House speaker Newt Gingrich.
He said Bush ignored the group's report, which said, among other things, that the U.S. would be attacked by a small group with weapons of mass destruction and that a large number of lives would be lost. Bush did not accept the report, although other administration officials, including National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice did.

"The president not only ignored warnings of a group of Americans who had 250 to 300 person-years of experience in national security and foreign policy, he actively opposed efforts to prepare this country for possible terrorist attacks," Hart said.
