What is the primary source of Bush's Right Hook photo?
where he is hitting the guy while playing Rugby? I think this is a photoshop and the typography description below looks modern to me. Typesetters back then did not have great kerning ability. I was a typesetter for 15 years since 1975 so I know a little about typography history.

Anyone have the source of the photo so I can have it authenticated? I think that this photo is out there to counter his sissy cheerleader photo.

4. That was the typesetting my hometown newspaper was using...
in 1971. The *exact* typesetting. I know this because I still have the copy of my birth announcement from it.

5. it's a shameful picture actually
Giving someone a sucker punch like that has NOTHING to do with rugby and everything to do with the most vile lack of sportsmanship.

The picture underscores everything you need to know about George W. Bush - he's a cheat and gratified by cheating.

Nevermind that a punch like that could potentially remove teeth, break a jaw or disfigure someone, it's just plain wrong.

I seriously doubt that it's a fake. Hasn't kerning been around forever? Wasn't that what made line justification easier? Not an expert but if it is a fake done by a republican then it was only done to appeal to nasty little people like bush.

7. Early computer typesetting didn't always have this capability...
I guess I'll have to go the Yale Library and see the 1969 yearbook for myself.

10. It was set on a Linotype

The font is Optima.

There were a couple of ways to kern type on a Linotype, a hot-metal linecaster; which one you used depended on how big a bad-ass you were with it.

A Linotype hot-metal linecaster worked by dropping brass type molds into a chase. You justified the type by putting brass wedges between the words; when you operated the "justifier," the wedges pushed the type out until it filled out the chase. After the type molds were dropped into place and justified, a control dispensed molten type metal into the line molds. The finished piece was a "lin-o-type," which was how the machine got its name.

How to kern type: A font of type came with a lot of kerning pairs already. These were molds with two kerned glyphs carved into them. If you wanted a kerned pair and it was in the set already, you just pressed the key for that pair and it dropped into the chase. The "badass" way to do it took some extra doing--you took a kerning file, filed two character molds until they fit together the way you wanted them to, then brazed them together. This you only did with headline type; kerning a font of text-size type with a file would have been a nightmare.
