Generally speaking, I have avoided having overt politics seep into my prayer and spiritual life. I mean, my spiritual beliefs helped form my political identity as a liberal (see the Sermon on the Mount), but I do not let things go in the opposite direction very often....I don't pray for my favorite politicians to be successful. It just feels wrong, in the soul, to ask God for help in temporal political matters...it feels, like me at least, like a sin, like asking God to help your baseball team or something.
Until now.
I believe that George W. Bush is a danger to America and a danger to life on this planet. His policies, near as I can determine, are a negation of my spiritual values and the beliefs on which I have tried (not always successfully) to organize my life. You know people by the friends they keep and by the fruits of their actions. Bush constantly lies....his friends are people like Karl Rove, a liar and speaker of false witness....his policies enrich the wealthy and hurt the poor...his "war as a first resort" foreign policy is an abomination...his failure to take responsibility for things like the prison torture scandal is appalling...
I try not to judge people but in this case I cannot help it. The man's actions are evil, evil for this country and evil for the world.
I therefore finding myself praying for a Bush defeat and a Kerry victory. I also pray for John Kerry to have the strength, courage, and wisdom to overcome the obstacles in his path and to restore HONOR AND INTEGRITY to the White House.
Whatever your spiritual or religious beliefs, or even if you lack them, please send warm thoughts John Kerry's way this evening and tomorrow. He needs our spiritual, mental, emotional, and psychical support as much as he needs our money and our campaign help.
Join me tonight in thinking these thoughts for John Kerry and our world. Even if you're an atheist.
