Advisers to both candidates sought to frame expectations by praising their rival's skills. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who opposed Kerry in the Democratic primaries and dealt with Bush as a member of Congress, said both men were skilled debaters.

"Sen. Kerry is very bright ... he has a comprehensive knowledge of government and of the issues," said Kucinich. "His approach is more studied."

Perhaps because of his background as a prosecutor, Kerry is "a good listener too ... the kind of person who could find an opening and go for it," said Kucinich.

Bush has a fine instinct for the political twists and turns as they unfold in a debate, for adjusting his tactics and concocting a concise, crowd-pleasing response, said Kucinich.

"He is very good in the moment. He listens well," said Kucinich. "He is quick, he knows how to hit a punch line ... and he enjoys it, too."
