Did you know the 2004 Presidential Election might have been decided by the thickness of a piece of paper? It could have, had Ohio Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell not been forced to back down.
Amazingly, at a time when voter registration is booming nationwide, Ohio Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell directed election officials to enforce an unreasonable rule requiring that all voter registration forms be printed on 80-pound card stock. Voter registration forms are now commonly available online and printed out on regular printer paper. But Blackwell directed election officials to reject voter registration forms submitted on ordinary paper and mail those applicants a new registration form to be resubmitted. With the October 4 Ohio registration deadline looming, many voters would not have had the chance to resubmit their voter registrations on time.
Fortunately, Blackwell relented to reason under a mountain of criticism. Yesterday, People For the American Way Foundation called on Blackwell to rescind this impractical requirement — arguing that it was burdensome and bureaucratic, could slow the voter registration process, and might disenfranchise some voters.http://www.electionprotection2004.org/
