If you haven't already called, here is Jon Kyl's phone number
to tell him to oppose Alito:

(202)224-4521.

FYI, I got a busy signal the first two times I called and was very briefly put on hold the third time. Hubby and I both put in our two cents.

3. I emailed him.
He is such an arse, he won't even listen or read.

I've sent McCain several emails, talking about how if he is an advocate against torture, Alito will back up whatever bsh wants to do.

But McCain, too, will just follow the rats.

5. He probably reads the messages, but he's not going to
do anything that will upset his Republican base ((big sigh)). I'm glad you mentioned McCain because I haven't called him yet.

Here's McCain's contact info for anyone interested:

12. Hi pirhana. Here's my email to McCain:
I am extremely concerned about the nomination of Judge Alito for a lifetime appointment to the highest court of the land. His record shows that he is an extremist by any standard, and consistently sides with the government and corporations over "the little guy." This is of particular importance with the Bush administration's overreach of power and tendency to act above the law with the use of signing statements and legal mumbo jumbo. This administration has no respect for civil liberties, the rule of national or international law, the Constitution, or the truth. I am deeply afraid that Judge Alito will grant additional powers to this administration under the philosophy of "The Unitary Executive" - powers this administration has proven time and again that it will abuse.

-----

I tried calling McCain's office, but got a recorded message.

18. Good one! I hope he reads it.
here's what I sent.
If he has any common sense, he would oppose Alito.

Senator McCain,
You often speak out on the subject of torture.
Yet, President Bush is determined to do whatever he deems is necessary,
in spite of the fact that the legislative branch of the government has
voted against the use of torture.

The only question that Alito answered in his hearings, is that he
believes the executive branch of government can have more power than the
other 2 branches.

I am so concerned about the future of this country.
If Alito is nominated to SCOTUS, the checks and balances that are so
important to our country, will be gone. The White House will be a
unitary power. Democracy will be a thing of the past.

You may as well forget about being an advocate for ending torture.
This administration has proven that it will do whatever it wants,
whenever it wants.

I urge you to vote NO on this nominee. AND should the Democrats decide
to fillabuster, which I hope they do, PLEASE DO NOT STOP THEM.

This administration is out of control, and the worst thing that could
happen is Bush getting a rubber-stamp in the Supreme Court.

Another amen with this one...

4. Does anyone think it would really make any difference?
I don't. Calling him will make no difference in how he votes. Kyl doesn't listen to anyone who disagrees with the White House stance on any issue.

6. You're right. There's little chance that
our calls and emails are going to change his mind. But we still need to call!! He needs to know the level of opposition that exists in Arizona, and that that opposition is active and vocal and informed. Our silence would too readily be interpreted as tacit approval.

7. I've called and emailed him on numerous occasions
The first time I got a reply saying 'I disagree but welcome you viewpoint'. In the past year, I have never heard from him even tho I continue to voice my opposition to his stance on whatever the point of the day is. Makes you want to throw in the towel when you don't even get a 'go screw you' reply to a carefully worded point of view.

on at least a weekly basis. All I get for my tax dollars are automatic reply e-mails. I don't care - he's still getting my message.
