STOCTKON, Calif. -- Even a last-minute loan that would have allowed a San Joaquin County widow to keep her home was not enough, as the auction for her house went on anyway.
Annie Johnson says she has no place to go now that San Joaquin County has auctioned off the home her husband built with his own hands. The 78-year-old widow owed the county $59,000 on the six-bedroom home in South Stockton. The appraised value of the home is $260,000.
Johnson was able to secure an FHA reverse loan, which would have paid off the debt and given her monthly payments, but the county's last deadline was too short to meet.
"They told us, 'You have five minutes to get back with me, but we're not going to answer the phone even if you call,'" said William Johnson, Annie's son.
