FIELD POLL: Voters appear to back dueling measures
By John Marelius
STAFF WRITER

August 18, 2004

California voters are initially favorable toward two conflicting November ballot propositions governing the rules of primary elections, according to a new Field Poll.

Voters considered likely to cast ballots in the Nov. 2 election favor Proposition 62, a citizens initiative that would allow all voters to choose from among the candidates of all political parties in primary elections.

They also support Proposition 60, which was placed on the ballot by the Legislature to thwart Proposition 62.

At this point, voter awareness of both measures is very small. Sixteen percent of the likely voters said they had heard of Proposition 62 and 6 percent knew anything about Proposition 60.

3. I have similar feelings.
I'm not opposed to ballot initiatives per se, but rather how easy it is to put them up for a vote. The purpose of ballot initiatives is to allow the people to pass legislation that has broad support but that the legislature won't pass because of corruption of selfish political reasons. Ballot initiatives in California are being used now as propoganda campaigns (Arnie's stupid edumacation initiative) and as vindictive tools for abusing groups without the voting power to stop the ballot initiative (various anti-immigration proposals.) The original intent of ballot initiatives has been almost completely forgotten.
